I guess Ron Jeremy is finally getting his mainstream recognition.

Last night's CSI, A Space Oddity, was about a murder at an SF con. Joshua Cox (who now goes by his porn name of Josh Coxx) played the lead actor in the tv show the Con was based around.

For some reason I've never read a Christopher Moore book. I've had lots of friends recommend them to me; as a guy who's fond of absurdist reads, it seems like a good fit.

This weekend, when we were visiting with some friends in Waterloo to watch the new Futurama movie (report: More cohesive than Bender's Game, funnier than Beast with a Billion Backs & Bender's Big Score), Valerie introduced me to Moore's Christmas novel over R4TG. Since I found it amusing, she agreed to lend me a copy, but warned me that it was very referential to his previous books. So I borrowed this one.

Practical Demonkeeping is about a small California tourist town which gets visited by a demon and his master, who are being pursued by the king of the Djinn under orders from King Solomon. They get involved with the various townsfolk, who include a down and out wedding photographer, his soon to be ex-wife, the laconic owner of the local general store/bait shop, and a restauranteur who bears no small resemblance to an obscure early 20th century fantasy writer.

It's everything that was promised, which includes being funny and a pretty quick read. Valerie had told me that I would finish it in an afternoon, and if it were possible for me to get an uninterrupted afternoon I'm sure I could put that to the test.

Thankfully, I have a couple more of his books that [livejournal.com profile] redeem147 has loaned me in the past, so I'll be able to dig deeper into his oeuvre. She also loaned me the Christmas book, which

Tubthumping by Chumbawumba. Not the whole "getting knocked down and getting back again indominitable spirit" bullshit, just the whisky drink, vodka drink, lager drink, cider drink thingy. Man, I could go for a cider right now.

Deadliest Warrior is what happens when you take the concept behind Mythbusters, and add recreationists who are just a leeeeeeettle bit insecure with their sexuality and pig corpses.

Seriously, I think Patton Oswalt needs to update his gay pride parade bit to be "make catty comments during Deadliest Warrior". This show is so awesome, and fairly homo-erotic.

Oh, man. Deadliest Warrior slashfic: According to rule #34, it already exists.

Primarily H/C, mind you.

I don't know how long the show can sustain an awesome level this high. I suspect it would be even more awesome drunk. Maybe with everyone picking a side. A drinking game is necessary.

I wonder why they have William Wallace Vs Shaka Zulu instead of a highlander vs a Zulu Warrior?

edit: I will admit, they lost cred when they said a katana compared poorly to a viking axe. Who ever took out a tank with a viking axe? Other than possibly the Viking Prince.

No, I'm not cool enough to get an invite, but apparently you can start with an openID account, which will let you read and subscribe to accounts, and let you get a sense of the place. if you have an LJ, you've got and OpenID.

It looks like a good implementation of the LJ code, at least. I guess it'll be interesting to see what they do. I wonder if it'll last longer than the other implementations (IJ & GJ, &c, &c)?

And, yes, holy crap, Deadliest Warrior is Hoo'd Win: the TV show.

edit: Oh, MAN. This show is just a big 'ol fighting boner. "The Samurai would blah blah blah!" "A Viking could blah blah blah!" "We shall test the sharpness of a katana on a human body!"

"If the katana can cut through this pig, the katana can cut through a viking."

Ohhhh, Chainmail was designed to stop slashing weapons.

It's Team Viking vs Team Samurai.

Well, Abe Vigoda's still alive as of half an hour ago, but Starlog is no more.

Starlog was one of my favourite periodicals in my youth. It, along with Ah! Caramelo!s were two things I always sought out at the corner shop where we'd wait for the feeder bus to take us home. It brought me constant joy to read Starlog, reading about books and tv shows and movies and comics (and occasional games).

There were always interesting articles to be found, too. They'd print interviews with scriptwriters and FX people in addition to performers and directors. They even published, with disturbing regularity, episode guides for all your favourite shows. I remember they did a Trek one written in character. Scotty had one that went "I dinnae remember a thing, Captain, I was droonk".

Good times. I haven't picked up an issue in decades (and that could, of course, explain much) , but I still have fond memories of it.

I'm un-necessarily fond of the old Intellivision games. Astrosmash, Burger Time, the two D&D games, they're all a hoot. Hell, I play Feeding Frenzy because it's cool, but also because it reminds me of Shark Shark.

I'm not great at these games; I've never played them enough to gain the instinctual familiarity with the patterns of gameplay you need to be great at them. But still, they can be a lot of fun.

Eastertime

Good weekend. Celebrated Yuri's Day with Chris & Valerie on Friday by watching Futurama and playing Race for the Galaxy. We just didn't KNOW we were.

We went to visit the parents for Easter. Dinner was had after they got back from church. We went to Kingston for a short tour around town, and stopped by the old Lake Ontario Park to look around.

Beyond here there are photos )

We also saw that they've installed a wind farm on Wolfe Island.

The farm is visible as you come up Bath Road into Kingston, and is easily visible from the Kingston waterfront. I wonder how loud the howls of NIMBY-ists were against its construction?

There are plans to upgrade it, either to an enviro-park or an art-park. It would be good to make use of the space.

On Easter we had a light breakfast before meeting up with Ron & Janet for Easter lunch with her family in Kingston. It being Easter, venue choice was somewhat limited, so it was at Lee Garden, an okay Chinese buffet joint.

We got there for noon, but it turned out the lunch was actually at one. Whoopsie! So we took a trip over to Bellevue House, former residence of Sir John A. McDonald. There'll be pictures of that tomorrow.

Just cracked the box this morning. I picked it up on way back from game last night; the store was already shut down, but John was still there so he let me come in to pick it up.

It looks kind of weak, actually. It has some neat stuff (the goals), some useful stuff (more cards, and a replacement for the Gambling World), and a solitaire game variant that looks somewhat useful, but also seems to take up a lot of the energy of this set.

It also includes a 6 point development that doesn't actually do aything; Imperium Lords gives you a two VP bonus for each Imperium card you have, but it's the only Imperium card in teh game. Eh?

Plus, and AOL.com account? For shame, Rio Grande games.

Edit: Apparently, there's at least a couple Imperium cards in the base set. Feh.
