So, yeah, another victim of the CBC cuts is Search Engine, their weekly podcast about internet/privacy/&c issues.
Thankfully, what the federal government taketh away, the provincial government giveth. So it's migrated to TVO. Huzzah!

Just Keep my Wood Chips Clean
Apr. 29th, 2009 01:54 pmOver on his LJ,
robin_d_laws has posted his variant Skill Challenge rules.
I think some of the wilder variants would come up when the group was in a really, really bad situation and started to get desperate. "Can we spend an action point and discard one of their cards?" "If I roll for a 40 target number, can I pick a card from the deck?" "If I take your trash out for the next six months, can I use Stealth again?"
And how Canadian a group are we, with a Tim Horton's cup on the table?

Apr. 27th, 2009 03:12 pmThere's a department run by the RCMP, OPP and the Competition Bureau Canada (I do think there's supposed to be an "of" in there, but I will not disagree with the feds) called Phonebusters.
Its mandate is such:
So, basically they're the scam cops. Man, I'd KILL to be working with this department. They don't appear to do any investigating or arresting, but it just sounds like it would be neat. Plus, I can only imagine being able to run off the various mutations of 419 letters would be more interesting than my current job.
Oh, hey. There are Puppy scams. That's just wrong.
Its mandate is such:
PhoneBusters is the central agency in Canada that collects information on telemarketing, advanced fee fraud letters (Nigerian letters) and identity theft complaints.

They know when they've gone viral
Apr. 8th, 2009 08:23 pmEarlier today, Gian Ghomeshi, AKA The Persian Guy from Moxy Fruvous, hosted Billy-Bob Thornton AKA The Former Mr. Angelina Jolie on Q, his daily Arts & Culture radio show on the CBC. Billy Bob... Billy Bob had emotional issues.
Apparently he's disavowed any knowledge of having been an actor (Most folks call it being a pompous ass, I reckon) and took umbrage wiht being mentioned as such.
The blowup (as it were) has gone a bit viral, even finding its way to the HQ of class, TMZ.com.
Well, I hopped over to Q-TV to check it out (see the video above) and as I started recharging my iPhone, I noticed that the Q Podcast was downloading. Now, I don't know what the normal turnaround time is for the Q Podcast, but it appears this is strictly BBT's blowup.
So, yeah, the CBC appears to be keeping on top of this. Good for 'em, I figure.

Feb. 3rd, 2009 04:56 pmHolidays are well planned this year, somewhat. I've got a few rollowers from last year that I got because my Christmas vacation got turned into a bereavement period, and I've got march break off (Hey, Ottawans! I'm coming for YOU!). I've got the two days prior to FanExpo off, and I've taken the Monday afterwards, too, so I can just relax. Maybe we'll stay for dinner after show and stay at the hotel an extra night.
I'm still trying to arange for the other few days of the year, and hoping I'll get holidays (Thanksgiving and Victoria day and Canada Day and all the other great holidays they don't celebrate in the Holy Republic).
I may just apply to get the Friday of Toronto Trek off. And maybe the Monday.

Dammit, people, she's a member of the Order of Canada! That puts her right up there with Rush!
edit: Oh, I'm sorry. That's Dr. Col. Loreena McKennit, OC.

Dec. 3rd, 2008 09:04 pmThanks to
If only I hadn't used up my lifetime supply of "Ordering t-shirts off the internet" karma.
You know what I want?
Dec. 2nd, 2008 09:18 pmI want a Youtube video of Stephen Harper set to the Guess Who's "These Eyes".
Cause that guy's eyes, man, they are creepy,

Prime Ministers in the Ground
Nov. 6th, 2008 12:35 pmA while back, I expressed my desire to visit the gravesites of Canada's Prime Ministers.
I got off to a good start, getting to see the gravesite of Sir John A.
I kind of stalled out after that.
I went back to the Government's website and dl'd a PDF. I'm rather upset that two of the early PMs were buried in Halifax (Thompson and Tupper), and I missed out on my chance to visit their final resting places when I was down there.
I'll probably endeavour to add Alexander to the list when next we go to Novi via Sarnia. Or possibly make a trip on Rememberance Day. Or just go on some brisk winter morning.
Mackenzie Bowell, one of the PMs who had the most indignities heaped upon him, is buried in Belleville, which makes him an easy trip to make whenever I head to visit ACB.
Laurier and Borden are both buried in Ottawa, and I think Cynra and I are due for a visit up there.
Arthur Meighen is buried in St. Mary's, which is an hour and a half from home.
Mackenzie King is buried in Toronto's Mt. Pleasant cemetery, which is supposed to be a nice place to visit anyway (if you can avoid the claustrophobic vampires! Man, that book sucked). King is one of the most interesting of our national leaders, having led the country through World War II with counsel from his mother. Who was dead at the time.
The biggest obstacle to the whole thing is RB Bennet, the poor bastard who had to handle the recession of the '30s. He's buried in Surrey, England. That would be somewhere near France, I think.
That brings us up through the PMs who ran the country up until the end of WW II, which I think is a good start.
It looks so easy, written down like that.

Wipe the out. All of them.
Nov. 5th, 2008 01:44 pmCNN had a freaking HOLOGRAM on their newscast last night. I kept expecting JD Roberts to order someone to kill some Jedi.
