So today was the semi-annual Bayshore Hobbies Games Day Sale.

I got up at stupid early o'clock to head down to Hamilton to meet up with [personal profile] pyat and [personal profile] doc_mystery.

If you go to either of their blogs you can see oodles of pictures.

We grabbed breakfast at a Cora's after getting our unfortunately shaped badges and hit the sale.

We may have gotten a little silly as the day progressed.

My haul was pretty restrained. I got a dented copy of Traders & Barbarians for Settlers of Cataan, the Bullwinkle & Rocky Roleplaying Board Game, and a few books, including finally getting a copy of Buried Secrets for Wraith. Didn't have the ST screen, unfortunately, but I have the book now.

I also picked up Cops, Crews and Cabals for Champions and the Player's Guide to Fighers & Barbarians and Kithbook Eshu.

This afternoon has been yard wokr, and tonight is Dr. Horrible. I have NEWS.

Which gives everyone plenty of time to make me this.

I'm sure [livejournal.com profile] jreynolds would like one too.

edit: The link on the photo now leads to the original site, not to itself.

I think it was either a link posted by [livejournal.com profile] shara or [livejournal.com profile] eyebeams. Possibly on RPG.net.

So, last night I went downtown, ostensibly to hang with [livejournal.com profile] kinra, but also to do some anniversary present shopping.

One advantage of being married to a huge geek? EVERY year's a paper anniversary!

So, after rummaging through no less than four sections looking for a copy of Old Freaking Possum Where The Hell Is That Damn Book About Cats?, we gave in and I got her a book about Torchwood and the Onion's Our Dumb Century.

Whee! Shopping is fun, where fun=torment.

We grabbed some dinner at Salad King, which is an awesome Thai place that doesn't sound like it will be as tasty as it is. We checked out 401, where I showed [livejournal.com profile] kinra my good Dragon article. It still feels awesome on occasion.

So, yeah. I've wrapped her books up in a big picture of Steven McHattie screaming, and will get them to her tonight. Huzzah for TBG!

The LJ friends list is barred at work (although looking at individual LJs is possible). I'm also verboten from looking at my iPhone at work. I mostly follow that.

So, yeah, I don't get to keep up with everyone here as well as I'd like. I catch glimpses and occasional tweets, but it's making me feel distanced from everyone.

And I do adore each and every one of you.

In less maudlin news, I'm trying the fitness classes at work. I've been doing the kickboxing class for a few weeks, and yesterday I tried the Boot Camp class.

It doesn't remind me much of actual boot camp, but that is only a good thing.

But now, the next day is turning out to not be fun. My calves (calfs?) are so very, very sore.

Seriously, going down stairs is actually very, very painful. Going up, not so much.

Way back in the dawning days of the internet, fellow J-School alumnus and Can*SF Imagineer Gary Hilson had taken over the reins of the CanSFRG (Canadian Science Fiction Resource Guide) from Can*SF Imagineer founder Paul Neumann (No Photo Available).

Gary was in the midst of his cross country journey of discovery, working his way from Ottawa to BC developing the sprawling media empire that would be Silicon Valley North (those motherfuckers).

In between tech journalism and brutal drinking, Gary put together a Web 1.0 site detailling whatever he felt like, trying to focus on Canadian SF but, really, Bob Sawyer already had his own site.

Anyway, Gary was perpetually starved for content. One day he inquired of his fellow Can*SF Imagineers if they would like to provide for him a list of their favourite SF&F books. We each did. I provided it to him under the title of "The Bitter Guide to Science Fiction".

It was enjoyed by the readers of that day. So I wrote another one.

Eventually, The Bitter Guide turned into a series. An irregular one, to be sure. I think I hated Snow Crash.

I then became a regular contributor to RPG.net. That was a lot of fun. I was in regular correspondence with RPG.net publisher/editor Sandy Antunes, and one day he read the link to TBG in my signature and enjoyed it.

So, soon I was having TBG published in the CANSFRG and on RPG.net. I was the king of acronyms!

Gary eventually folded CANSFRG (a concept ripe for relaunch as a web 2.0 site; All Bob Sawyer, All The Time!) and I drifted away from RPG.net after everyone went crazy after 9/11. Soon, the time pressures of a shitty job and married life caused TBG to be only a fond memory.

[livejournal.com profile] pyat was kind enough to give me an LJ code one day, which I used to begin the blog which you read before you.

It's a brand that's, admittedly, kind of weak. My boss at the shitty dot.com wanted to launch it as a website where I'd grind on shit and people would grind on shit, but it never came to be. Shame.

So, yeah. [livejournal.com profile] thebitterguy has deep roots, punks! Respect!

Mostly for my own reference, but [livejournal.com profile] terminal_pariah posted this link to the Google Blog Converte recently. I guess it would be useful if anyone's still trying to do conversions or extractions.

Livejournal has let got 20 of 28 employees.

Good thing I didn't spring for that permanent account, eh?

I'm kinda bummed about this. I mean, sure, it's not dead (yet!), but I've been on LJ for seven years now, and I enjoy it, and I've met a lot of very nice people through here. Seriously, the "prat/cool bean" ration is very high, although admittedly that's probably due to me being very selective.

Feh. If it all falls apart, you can always find me at Wordpress.

Some douche already took The Bitter Guy over there.

Thanks, LJ

You know what LJ does now? If you delete some douchehole's comment, it asks you if you wanna put a ban on sir douche a lot too.

Fuckin' A I do, LJ! Thanks!

[livejournal.com profile] easyalchemy got this started by quoting the lyrics in a Facebook update, so I've had it nestled in my brain for the past couple days inbetween Christmas songs.

I got a copy of the Peanuts Christmas album, which remains a holiday delight. I suspect Guaraldi had an extra set of arms.

Also on FB, [livejournal.com profile] malliabu mentioned this collection of Christmas music done in the style of 8 bit Nintendo tunes. I'm not huge into electronic music in general, or 8 bit stuff specifically, but this is a very nice selection of music.

Add to that a Christmas album sent as a gift (electronically, sure, but sent) and it's a nice holiday season.

Beneath the cut, I've got the lyrics to Bonanza. Now, you have to remember, it was sung by Lorne Greene himself, so you must imagine this sung by OA (Original Adama) AKA The Voice of Doom.

Wait, how is this one of those impressive German words, when there's a direct translation to English that means the same thing?

I should go to [livejournal.com profile] willard41's lj and mock them.
thebitterguy: (Default)
Well, that seems to have gone by pretty quickly.

Oh no. I've damned us all, haven't I?

Remember the lady who wouldn't give candy to Obama supporters? Someone sicced 4chan on her.

Oh my.

Just a quick shout out to [livejournal.com profile] life_on_queen for inspiring tomorrow's Hoo'd Win. Huzzah!

Yes, it's both overly silly and will happen to anyone who doesn't keep their inbox clean, but hey.

edit: see, it's "LEET". Heh.

Ah, man, I'm goin back to bed.

[livejournal.com profile] njpax was Nancy Kippax, an old school Trek fan whose lj was dedicated to reminiscing about her time in fandom. She passed away recently, but the LJ is still there for the reading.

The Lights Went Out.

I talked about the original event here and I talked about it the next year here.

A song from the Time Lord Rock genre entitled Blink, to commemorate the recent Hugo win:

I got it from [livejournal.com profile] papajoemambo who has made a post on what Nerds vs Geeks means to him.

Man, that bit at the end.
