Over on his website, Peter David ponders the news about a possible Buffy Remake.

I could very well be wrong–in fact, wouldn’t be surprised if I was–but I see this as a big negotiating ploy. I think that at some point the producers must have approached Whedon, he had terms they were reluctant to meet (money, creative control, whatever) and so they’ve gone public with the notion that they’re willing to proceed without him in order to gain negotiating leverage.

He also points out that Gene Roddenberry was strongly involved with Star Trek: The Motion Picture, but encouraged people to skip The Wrath of Khan. Which is, at the very least, an interesting anecdote.

The greatest thing about the internet is it has taken the normally diffuse nerd community and brought it together to give it things to bitch about.

For example, somewhere on the intertubes someone did a list of "tough women" (INSERT SEXIST JOKE HERE, am I right, fellas?), and of course feelings were bruised. How dare Character A rate higher than Character B! This is an mockery! A mockery!

Two of the sterling members of that list were Buffy Summers, Vampire Slayer and Ellen Ripley, Xenomorph avoider.

It seems a shame to make them fight. They have so much in common! Ripley’s foes are phallic xenomorphs from the deepest subconscious of a mad Swiss, while Buffy’s are dramatic incarnations of the various trauma of the young adult world.

They’ve both got strange maternal issues, with Ripley upon being informed her daughter has died of old age glomming onto the first traumatized pre-teen she chances upon. Buffy found herself in the unwanted role of den mother to a sprawling army of teen proto-slayers.

They both find their only stable romantic relationships in the arms of strong military men, but both lose them, whether through screenwriter dickishness chance or their own stupidity.

They've both died in climactic scenes by going for a slo-mo high dive. A nine from the Russian judge!

And they’ve both been in lousy movies written by Joss Whedon.

But, in the end, there’s no room for tea and biscuits here in Hoo’d Win. No, there is only blood and honour. Who shall it be? Whose rage burns hotter? Whose limbs are mightier?

You! Make! The! Call!

I'm watching Once More With Feeling again. Watched it once normal, and now again with the Jay Dub's commentary.

I really enjoy this episode.

So, Wednesday night I picked up my new CPAP machine, an S8 Elite from ResMed with the Mirage Swift nasal pillows system.

(And the wonderful links I included? As useless as a truck full of rats in a tampon factory. So I have a photo. )

It's a wonderful device, although it looks like a piece of bedside art for a suburban technofetishist.

The appointment followd my first month with a loaner system, an older Fisher & Paykel model. It's odd upgrading the machine, because the differences are rather breathtaking.

The machine, for example, turns on automatically when I put on the mask. This is a pretty neat feature, especially since my other model required me to turn it on using a rather clumsy switch that was carefully concealed under a plastic cover. The new model also relaxes on the exhale to make it easier to breathe, which is a really good feature to have on one of these.

So, yes. Now I just wait to get my rebate back from my insurance company for the portion I paid (the government covers a large portion of it) and then do something with that money. Possibly pay my Credit Card.

I am going to Ad Astra tonight. Have a panel on Avatar today and one on Buffy Season 8 tomorrow.

Behind the cut is this month's alternate cover for Buffy: Season eight. The series has been less than awesome, but I think this cover sort of makes up for all of that.

Like the other ones, without Captain America )

There's a TV Guide interview with Joss Whedon about his new Buffy comic series (season 8).

There's a preview of the first few pages, with a nice denial of the events of The Girl in Question.

Mercedes McNab in Playboy. NSFW, svp.

That second picture? "That bitch is on Dexter, and look at me here!"

I can only imagine the scary look on Creepy Fanboys faces right now.

edit: "in Playboy" does mean there will be bits your boss and parents disapprove of (unless you work for [livejournal.com profile] kynn's old boss, then he'd swear at you for being weak kneed or summat).

A replica of the Urn of Osirus (sic) from Buffy.

Sure, I know where it was FROM, but $90? Wow.

Nic Cage to produce Dresden Files tv show.

No word yet on who's to star, although Robert Wolfe will exec produce.

OMAC post-mortem by Greg Rucka.

He isn't the guy who lied about being a Navy SEAL, is he?

With regards to all the silliness over on various OBAVA groups, I only have this to say: Leave the drama for yo Mama.

I feel like I'm watching something orchestrated very, very badly.

1:02: "I quit! But if anyone wants to take over, let me know!"
1:10: "Oh, don't leave! But if you are leaving, let me take over!"
1:16: "Oh, okay, thank you random person."

It's like if Mission Impossible were run by retards or something.

Chaos Bleeds is disappointing. There's little difference between Xander and Buffy (Buffy has more moves, but since the game is 90% 'hit 'em and stake 'em', it's irrelevant). Willow is cool, but magic hard.

Camera Control is annoying. Overall, it's much less satisfying than the original. Sword sucks, man; the baddies close way too quick for it to be of use. Most weapons are useless (still can't figure out how to make the watergun work). So I hit things and stab them with a stake.

The extras don't make me laugh. The multiplayer is mediocre. The screen is too small to track your character.

Not as bad as Enter the Matrix, but not as good as the original.

I'm gonna go play Halo now.

Work is beginning to patter on quicker and quicker. Six came around before I knew it. I did manage to begin one review for [livejournal.com profile] graveyardgreg and work on another, but I don't get as much time as I'd like.

The B5 rpg is odd; I'm enjoying it quite a bit, but it's still set in the weakest of the seasons, and there seem to be these occasional glaring editing errors that I keep forgetting to sticky note.

Took the TTC to the MTCC for SC2. Got to meet HG & James Leary (aka Clem).

We are right next to Denise Crosby, so I may have to suspend the restraining order I have for the wife speaking to her.

It also turns out she went to a Jays game with her son tonight. So my plan to walk up to her and say "yeah, I loved you on The Red Shoe Diaries. Tell ya, I whacked off like a lumberjack" is foiled by common decency. Fuck.

Got to watch JL chat with the Twins from The Matrix Reloaded. Oddly enough, they talked about acting (Best line of the night:"No one wants to be an ACTOR. They want to be a MOVIE STAR"), makeup, and the New York theatre scene.

HG is the world's greatest guest. I toss him a throwaway line ("You've never had to do a big makeup role, eh?") and he goes into a short monologue about working on Mercy Point. He's gooooood. I love actors who know their cues.

So everyone should show up.

Post script on TAR. Glad the Gay Guys finally won. Of the final 3, none of them were clowns, so I picked Reichen and Chip because FLO v 2.0 and Dave & Jeff annoyed me to death.

I mean, seriously, Jon was concussed and FLO v2.0 still has a broken hand. They were dead.

Creighton & I continue to plan our trip. Once they allow Canuckleheads in (frickin' Yankee bastards. I hate them).

Started off with a nice weekend breakfast (ye olde bacon & ye olde eggs) and the standard 'runnin' around'. Went over to [livejournal.com profile] pyat's to meet the baby. Quite cute. I even got to hold her for a few minutes, in spite of my 'it is small and fragile' phobia.

Went for dinner w/ Snra Bitter afterwards at a downtown Firkin. Enjoyable, although we should really go someplace with a different menu someday. She stayed to meet up with some friends for a Buffy wake, as it were. They were supposed to go to Dave & Buster's to watch it on YTV, but that just fell through.

[livejournal.com profile] mr_weasel and [livejournal.com profile] mindrobber had their housewarming party last night. Quite fun. Many wonderful people. At something related to Midnight, [livejournal.com profile] mr_weasel and I serenaded Bay St with a heartfelt rendition of the classic tune Barret's Privateers. It was at that point that I realized I'd had a bit to drink, as I forgot a verse.

Ah, well. Home to bed it was, then.

Wife & Colleen r' upstairs watching Once More w/ Feeling on Space's V-Day Buffy marathon.

Earlier, they got a visit from the JW's. Colleen answered the door, and said "Sorry, but we're watching the Buffy Marathon right now". Now I gotta scrub the cross off the door.

Oh, yeah. Check this out. [livejournal.com profile] noizangel, I'm looking at you.

Took a walk on break today. Good lord, it was gorgeous outside.

We put up with six months of shit so we can appreciate this. That's all I gotta say.

Buffy game went well on Sunday. It seems that the players want to play again, so I kind of regret tossing every red herring out the window. A third session might have worked.

Used Sweeps Week from the core rulebook. There are some quibbles with it (like how to handle White Hat PCs who go somewhere where Bad Guys are without the Slayer), but overall it's fun.

Now I have to figure out how the hell I could run a Buffy game set in Kingston.

The characters include A Slayer, A Watcher, a guy with an Axe, a hockey player, and Xander. Okay, not Xander Xander, but the 'scooby gang member'.

Buffy Game: went well. [livejournal.com profile] nottheterritory and [livejournal.com profile] pyat made it in in spite of Shitty Weather.

Used the first adventure, and time ran out before we got to the first money shot, so I called it and we will reconvene on the 16th of March, God willing.

It is always interesting, the first time you actually USE mechanics. There's a fair bit of 'oh, so THAT'S how it works'. Thank Elvis [livejournal.com profile] nottheterritory and his amigo [livejournal.com profile] noondaypaisley were familiar with it.

[livejournal.com profile] noondaypaisley and WM Cavanaugh, Pyramidian extraordinaire, rounded out the group. The interesting thing is both of the first interested parties did not make it in. Which is unfortunate, but we made it through.

Saw No Way Out at William's. Damn, but that's a huge TV.

The Regal/Storm vs RVD/Kane match was surprisingly lifeless. I think the smarks who've pegged Storm & Regal as not giving a shit anymore may have a point. The HHH/Steiner match was better than their match at the Royal Rumble, but that says little.

Vince once again screwed someone in Montreal, the Benoit/Lesnar vs Team Angle match was awesome, and the Undertaker/Big Fat Show match did NOT suck completely. It rated at least a 5, for the rope walk & UT sailing (SAILING!) through the air.

Hogan Rock almost put me to sleep, but the last match of the night generally does.
