Doom tries stand up.

When you ask yourself "Did I ever finish that comic miniseries I was reading?" and after looking around find out it has been on hiatus for six months and you just noticed it now.

Ah, The Twelve. You were a fun read.

So, I dug up the Polaris website and looked through the panelist info, and it seems like the schedule is mostly comlete. So below the cut are my

My Polaris schedule )

A few thoughts.

Saturday night's going to be busy. Boy, it's a good thing there isn't a large & popular event going on at that time!

Oh, wait. At least there's no fucking 1 am panels this year. Seriously, does the programming staff just hate me?

I appear to be alone on half of my panels. Including the one where I really, REALLY don't like the show. No one else seems interested in black superheroes or Scott Pilgrim. Just you wait! Hipster charm will win you over!

There's no sign that there's a Panels in Peril list, so I don't know what they'll do if I'm the only one interested.

I should re-read & re-watch the subjects of my panels, I guess.

They're making a sequel to Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. But they're setting it in Civil War.

Feh. Thanks for fucking that up.

So, Over on MGK.com there's a regular feature called "Thursday Who's Who" that is only intermittenly interrupted for So You Think You Can Dance commentary (and Jesus, I wish I was kidding). Thursday Who's Who takes a character from DC's brave attempt at OHOTMU goodness and rates them on the Rex The Wonder Dog scale.

Today's feature takes us back to the good old days, when new features would get a 12 page introduction in DC Comics Presents or Teen Titans (which, ironically enough, got a 12 page introduction in DC Comics Presents) or, in this case, Legion of Super-Heroes. The chracter is Dark Opal, the villain of the DC Maxi-series Amethyst.
MGK describes Amethyst's concept as such:

Nowadays the concept of an ongoing fantasy comics series targeting young girls seems like the sort of thing that makes DC editorial go “hsssst!” and then cower in the darkness. “Catering to different demographicsss.. it burns us, precious, it burrrrrns.”

That phrase, btw, made me spit my tea all over my computer monitor.

Amethyst seems silly, if only because it sounds like the standard "magical princess from another world" trope (much like Power Pack is about a group of kids who get super powers form their magical space pony, and a shiny cyber-nickel to anyone who can link me to the TV Tropes pages for those two). But the series was well liked by its readers, which for some reason I wasn't one of. It's one of those DC stories from the past that are not currently available, much like Atlantis Chronicles.

And no, I'm not gonna shut up about that. You can get Camelot 3000 in trade, but not a book that does something interesting with Atlantis? Fuck that shit.

Anyway, yeah, Amethyst was neat.

Well, casting news is out on Thor, and it appears YHB was, in fact, correct when he (that is, I) surmised that Brian Blessed would be a good pick for Odin.

(btw; anyone else having trouble with text not appearing on that web site?)

Yeah, get an eyepatch on that guy and it'll be awesome. Isn't the film due for release next summer? So I wonder how much filming time will be, then post will probably take a while.

Of course, that also raises the question (but does not beg it) of whether or not most of it will be greenscreen/CGI or if they'll have location filming and physical effects.

Edit: Apparently, Thor is Not due until '11.

This is apparently a variant cover Marvel is making for Wolverine Year. Very nice. I'd get the poster.

Captain Britain to end after Vampire Nation storyline.

That's sucky. The book was, IMHO, saddled with an un-necessary burden with starting off with a Secret Invasion crossover, after a mostly enjoyable lead in with the Wisdom mini-series.

On the other hand, this will now open a space for a "non-USA" comic in the MU. Maybe a decent relaunch of Alpha Fligth?

I said decent.

Which gives everyone plenty of time to make me this.

I'm sure [livejournal.com profile] jreynolds would like one too.

edit: The link on the photo now leads to the original site, not to itself.

Okay, so I'm following Deadliest Warrior enthusiastically, which includes following two of its hosts (Max Geiger and Geoff Desmoulin) on Twitter.

So, I looked at Desmoulin's web page. And holy crap. World class Biathlete, PhD candidate, and an EMT. Canuck. Has worked at a company called Neurostream Technologies, Inc., which is now called Victhom Human Bionics Inc.

Look, he gets zapped with some Gamma Rays, we're looking at a real life Walter Langkowski.

I'm just saying.

Edit: Oh, yeah. His middle name is Thor.

Sequential, which is always interesting, has announced that The 2009 Paradise ComicCon has been cancelled. I guess that'll teach them not to schedule events against Toronto Trek.

My favourite bit is how [livejournal.com profile] kev_the_mev did not quit working with Paradise to work on FanExpo, he defected. Man, I wonder how Orwell would react to that description of events.

Remember how after Iron Man split the skies Marvel came out and had this ludicrous movie production schedule that would see an IM sequel, and movies about Thor, Captain America & an Avengers film all out in three years?

Yeah, I think they've realized they may have bitten off more than they can chew.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Marvel will delay the Branagh helmed Thor and The Avengers by a year each. Thor will be out in 2011, and The Avengers will be out in 2012.

Iron Man 2 will still be coming out next year, with Scarlett Johansson starring as the Black Widow. We're also getting another Spider-Man movie in 2011.

Missing from all this is the Captain America movie, which was supposed to come out Victoria Day weekend prior to The Avengers, and would presumably have a cliffhanger ending that would lead into it.

Sam Jackson recently got signed to a nine picture deal with Marvel studios, which will presumably get him at least a cameo in most of these films as well as leading roles in Avengers & a theoretical SHIELD movie.

I regret not asking Wright if he had anything to say about the Ant-Man film.

Marvel has yet to offer any guarantees that the films will not molest the audience, sexually or otherwise.

Did Omega Men ever discuss the Green Lanterns & The Guardians? There seems to be some mention of them in the summary of issue #39 of Green Lantern.

Today is not the worst day of my life. It isn't really even a contender.

However, it sure hasn't been a good one.

You'll probably be seeing a swathe of Tweets about this momentarily, but I figured this is a tale that requires being told in more than 140 letters at a time.

So, this morning I needed to fill up the tank, so I headed to the gas station. I noticed that there seemed to be a strange sound coming from behind me. God, don't let it be the engine, I prayed.

God has a funny sense of humour, kids.

I got to the gas station and filled up Supercar (22.65 kpl trip, thanks to the fine people at Road Trip for doing the math) and gave the car a quick walkaround. Ah. Driver rear tire's flat. Fuck.

It's been troublesome with losing air, so I took it to the air pump and filled it up. It's never a good sign when you can HEAR the air flowing back out of the tire.

I figured I'd go to the dealership and see if they can help, and got onto the highway. A bus had broken down in the middle lane near Trafalgar, which had not helped traffic today (Cynra described the highway as a parking lot, which was an accurate assessment). I got onto the 401, and a nice fellow commuter told me that I had a flat tire.

That was when I figured out that I wasn't making it to work on time.

I realized that I had a tire patch kit and pump in Supercar (which we get in lieu of a spare). Of course, I opened up the thingy that holds it and realized that I didn't have any instructions. Feh.

Since it was a mild morning with a light drizzle, with occasional epic gusts of wind, I headed into the Starbucks there. Not only were they cool with me waiting for my tow truck driver in there, they gave me a free coffee as well.

I killed some time waiting for him to arrive, and when he did we tried out the sealflation device, and it was no good.

Now, my plan had been to have Supercar towed to the dealership, get the tire replaced, and head into work. The tow truck drive pointed out that the rim was damaged, and the dealership would be unlikely to try to fix it, instead replacing both rim and tire.

He also pointed out that my CAA coverage covered 10 kms free towing, after that it was, like, a thousand dollars a klick. Okay, two. The point is, it would add up.

So, desperation being the stepfather of inspiration, I remembered that I had my summer tires, on rims, at home. So I had him drive me home, and then we took the car over to Canadian Tire, where I got the flat taken off and the summer put on. Now, God willing, I won't have to worry about a sudden snowfall in the next few weeks (I shudder to imagine the kind of control issues you'd get with one summer and one snow tire). I eventually made it to work, only three hours late.

Now, this could have been a shitty, shitty day. As I said, God knows it wasn't a good one. But everyone I dealt with today was great. The Starbucks barristas were very friendly, and like I said, free coffee. The tow truck driver was considerate, and even helped me avoid the towing fees. The staff at Canadian Tire were helpful and quick.

So, yeah, that wasn't as bad a day as it could have been. Tonight is gaming and roti night, and before that there's my first kickboxing class at the wellness centre, and hopefully a visit to Dragon Lady for my fix.

So, while pillaging the MPL's online card cataloge for new Graphic Novel additions (and all you can find on there are juveniles; if you want stuff from the adult GN selection, there's no luck, unless you know who the author is or what the title is.

Anyway, I saw they had four Tales from the Crypt books available, so I figured I'd give them a try. I assumed they were reprints of the old EC books, but when I picked them up from the library, I discovered that they were, in fact, new digest sized stories.

The stories are not GREAT, but they're fun and creepy little stories. They're hooked right into the zeitgeist, as it were. There's a story about an action figure collector who comes to a horrid end, and an MMORPG player who finds the events in his real life start to reflect in game, and vice versa. A lot of Duh Duh Duhhhhh! moments. The American Idol one is particularly enjoyable.

Nothing to compare to, say, the one about the baseball player with the poisoned cleats, but some fun storytelling.

Jim Salicrup's got EiC duties, and Fred Van Lente both write a couple stories in the first couple issues. Joe Lansdale does a story in the fourth issue. The publisher, Papercutz, is also doing GNs based on the Hardy Boys & Nancy Drew, and is republishing a lot of Classics Illustrated backstock.

Holidays are well planned this year, somewhat. I've got a few rollowers from last year that I got because my Christmas vacation got turned into a bereavement period, and I've got march break off (Hey, Ottawans! I'm coming for YOU!). I've got the two days prior to FanExpo off, and I've taken the Monday afterwards, too, so I can just relax. Maybe we'll stay for dinner after show and stay at the hotel an extra night.

I'm still trying to arange for the other few days of the year, and hoping I'll get holidays (Thanksgiving and Victoria day and Canada Day and all the other great holidays they don't celebrate in the Holy Republic).

I may just apply to get the Friday of Toronto Trek off. And maybe the Monday.

Five Questions below here. )
