The Amazing Race. [livejournal.com profile] luciencarter and I have often discussed it (well, previously; I don't know if he still watches the show) but it's a case of fuck the million, you get to go on a race around the world. That's some fun stuff.

Just watch you don't get fucked by a bad cab driver. They're the worst.

Mama Cass Elliot has been in the ground for thirty five years. She would be Gran'mama Cass now.

I think it's time we just laid off the weight jokes. Seriously. And the ham sandwich jokes. ESPECIALLY the ham sandwich jokes

Now I know it'll be hard, but this is a good first step. I mean, it'll be hard to switch away. For God's sake, she was in a band called The Big Three. But we will be strong.

And Karen Carpenter, now that I mention it. All the damn sandwich jokes. Seriously, what's WRONG with you people?

Karen Carpenter/Mama Cass jokes are RIGHT OUT.

That is all.

I don't recall where I saw this previously, but the Wax Cylinder Preservation Society looks pretty neat, if only to listen to century old comedy routines.

Earlier today, Gian Ghomeshi, AKA The Persian Guy from Moxy Fruvous, hosted Billy-Bob Thornton AKA The Former Mr. Angelina Jolie on Q, his daily Arts & Culture radio show on the CBC. Billy Bob... Billy Bob had emotional issues.

Apparently he's disavowed any knowledge of having been an actor (Most folks call it being a pompous ass, I reckon) and took umbrage wiht being mentioned as such.

The blowup (as it were) has gone a bit viral, even finding its way to the HQ of class, TMZ.com.

Well, I hopped over to Q-TV to check it out (see the video above) and as I started recharging my iPhone, I noticed that the Q Podcast was downloading. Now, I don't know what the normal turnaround time is for the Q Podcast, but it appears this is strictly BBT's blowup.

So, yeah, the CBC appears to be keeping on top of this. Good for 'em, I figure.

My darling.
Ten years we've been together
(nine as husband and wife).
Marriage is never easy.
Two people
squeezed into one space
causes friction
but friction smoothes things out
if it doesn't set them on fire.
Each of us has dealt with the other
changing, growing, moving together
and separately.
Our love moves and grows like an oak,
from a tiny acorn and now
strong and steadfast against the sky.
But I still won't go see Dragonball.

GIR!

You know what I need? A Darth Vader Icon from when he's doing his "as you wish" bow to the Emperor ("What the Emperor didn't know was that whenever Vader told him 'as you wish', what he was really saying was 'I love you.'") with the caption "My Bad".

Feeling very worn down today. Have been for a while. Hopefully when we hit spring (in the practical sense instead of the technical sense) it'll pick me up.

Got a call from Gearhead yesterday, so I assume the bike is ready for pickup.

Contemplating picking up a cheap laptop w/ an external drive. Anyone got a good source they'd recommend?

Tonight is Cynra's last(?) bellydance class of the current session. She's planning on signing up for another one, or possibly two.

Game night tomorrow. Not looking forward to it as two characters have come to blows and I want to just slap the players for it, one for taking a dumb action and the other for reacting to it in a way that seems pointless. I just really don't like inter-party conflict. I may end up backstabbing both of them.

So, yeah. In case I haven't mentioned it here, I broke my lasagna cooking cherry this past weekend. Had a fascinating discussion with [livejournal.com profile] mr_weasel about the cost efficiencies of Fresh Vs Store-bought frozen (you spend a little more buying the ingredients, but the cooking time is reduced). It's a foolishly easy dish to make, as long as you're not making your own sauce. And even then, well, we've got tomato sauce made from our garden sitting in the pantry

The recipe I used required ricotta or cottage cheese in the middle, mixed with defrosted frozen spinach. Now, personally, spinach is a take it or leave it proposition for me (I often pass it by when using a salad bar, to my shame).

The spinach in this dish, though, is not making itself loved to me. I don't know if it's because I defrosted it the easy way (microwave) instead of letting time and nature take its course. The flavour is just strange, and it has an odd, tough texture that I'm not loving.

Meh. It was a casserole dish of pure gold that came out of the oven, in any case.

One of the (few) perks of my position as co-ordinator for GX is that I get to occasionally take a trip out to other gaming cons to network and other fancy things. The best one was a weekend trip Cynra & I took to Origins one year (which is probably one of my favourite gaming events). While I networked she got to enjoy the educational track they offer, which is quite interesting. All I can say is: Teachers get in free.

But that's neither here nor there.

Of course, GenCon, while being the big show, tends to be rather fruitless. Since it's generally 1-3 weeks before FanExpo, I'm either psychotically late to get anything done for that year's show, or so early that people forget about it completely and I give them a promotional package for nothing. Admittedly, it does mean I get to spend much of the weekend gaming and socializing, which is hardly a drawback.

So this year I'm going to be going to CanGames in Ottawa. This'll give me a chance to do some gaming with local folks (I believe I've signed up for one of your HEX games, [livejournal.com profile] jkahane) and network with some people, as well as get to see what people are playing in a con setting in time to possibly get some games of that organized at GX.

So, yeah, that'll give me some gaming time up in Ottawa town, which I am looking forward to.

I posted this to [livejournal.com profile] doc_mystery because it seemed to be right up his alley, but I figured it would be of interest to the rest of the peeps out there.

A pair of professors from the U of T are investigating Agatha Christie's novels to see if there is any evidence in them of Alzheimers. They feel that evidence of advancing Alzheimers will be visible in textual analysis before other signs.

Turning to indefinite nouns is common as one ages, says Lancashire, as specific words become harder to reach. Severe vocabulary decline, however, indicates cognitive degeneration: “It suggests there’s a problem in retrieval from long-term memory.” More will be gleaned when the results from more complex analysis of Christie’s work are available in the late summer.

To contextualize the findings, they’ll also need a baseline study of an author who didn’t suffer from dementia to deduce how language changes with normal aging, says Lancashire. He believes a similar screen of the work of H.G. Wells, who had a long, prolific career without any indication of cognitive impairment, could provide that.

Whether textual analysis will ever become a routine diagnostic tool is a question mark. A decline in written skills can be a significant early marker of Alzheimer’s, says Morris Freedman, the head of neurology at Baycrest. “Because writing is a learned, not a natural skill, it breaks down early,” he says. But he’s skeptical such ambitious analysis is practical: “You’d have to have large samples over time,” he says.
