Date: 2008-03-11 02:51 pm (UTC)But, with my cholesterol levels, my blood pressure numbers, and a host of other things, Wife(v.2.0) has decided that we are going to be pescaterians in the future (fish + ovo-lacto-vegetarian).
Since I'm allowed to keep fish and shellfish and whatnot in my diet, I'm not too upset about losing other sources of protien; I wasn't hot on them anyway, since I can no longer afford the really good beef, pork, lamb, and other meats that I so love.
And since I'm moving to the coast, the fruit of the sea should be cheaper. And there's a good chance that I'll finally be able to score a decent plate of escargot.

Date: 2008-03-11 03:09 pm (UTC)These days I normally regret cholesterol/sodium-rich food after I finish it, rather than avoiding it. I *should* change that.

Date: 2008-03-11 03:19 pm (UTC)I eat as I grew up, albeit with a bit more diversity. The main thing that regulates the quality of what I eat is the amount of money I have to spend. I'd eat better foods if I could afford it, which I can't, so unfortunately, I don't.

Date: 2008-03-11 05:26 pm (UTC)I ended up having to mark all of your second section. I actually don't have an ethical issue with animal consumption, my ethical issue is the way animals are treated pre-consumption. Also, I believe that, at least in the US, there is far too much seperation between the meat in the grocery store and where it came from, so I wish people knew more about what they are actually consuming here.
My family was veg, when I turned 18 and moved out, I started eating meat again, I gained 100 lbs, so I stopped. I've lost 45 of it, so I must be doing something right. If I lived somewhere other than Denver, I may make a decision not to be veg, but at this time, it's so easy to do with the amount of local farmers markets around here.
Also, my husband is a very strict lacto-ovo vegetarian, so that pretty much makes me the same.

Date: 2008-03-11 05:44 pm (UTC)As for the way meat is treated pre-consumer, that's part of the reason I prefer to eat game meats. Fortunately, bison is very easy to get out here in BC.

Date: 2008-03-11 05:46 pm (UTC)I do it for ethical reasons, not because I believe that eating meat is wrong but more because the process by which most people get meet is horrendously unethical. Not just for the animals, but for the environment.
Clear cutting the rainforest so that people can east .39 hamburgers at McDonalds isn't something I call great for anyone.

Date: 2008-03-11 07:49 pm (UTC)I don't mind most vegetables and eat them regularly, but I can't stand most fruit besides bananas and occassionally an apple.
I am a fairly adventurous eater nowadays. When I was a kid, I was pretty picky, but now I'll try most anything. Growing up it was the typical "Farm Diet" of garden fresh vegetables, plenty of wild game, tons of pork (my dad worked at a hog farm) and it was all really good stuff, but I tend to get more enjoyment out of foods that weren't available when I was growing up, like Asian and Mexican cuisine. Sushi, and other exotic foodstuffs.

Date: 2008-03-11 07:55 pm (UTC)If something ain't moving too fast, I'll probably eat it unless it's a crustacean (allergies, yanno). Veggies, legumes, chickens, fire hydrants... all qualify as food if they can me made to taste good and, optionally, be healthful. I eat very little salt due to my wife's dietary issues.
I've always been an omnivore, but I have as an adult made the conscious decision not to be a vegetarian or anything of the sort... for several reasons, not just the fact that animals are made of meat and therefore are yummy. I would prefer that animals should be treated well, but they're still food and that's a big part of why they exist as far as I'm concerned.
