So this weekend, in lieu of attending any large scale cons in the US, a bunch of us got together to celebrate the 45th anniversary of Dr. Who (and, unsuspectingly, VIctory in Iraq day).

Dinner was a Korean BBQ nearby, also close to the new Toronto Trek hotel. We joked at least once "we have to hurry or we'll miss the masquerade". We loved

Korean BBQ is very interesting. Marinated meats are brought to your table and you cook them on a grill built into your table. Very tasty. We got the all you can eat platter, eschewing the ox tongue, ox liver, and squid.Yes, yes, we are all weak.

Cynra was not enthused with the idea. That is a particularly mild way of putting it. She has a look she makes sometime when she is not thrilled with an idea, like she'd just bitten into a bit of cilantro in her ice cream (her non-cilatro flavoured ice cream, mind you). For the initial bit, she sat at her spot eating her rice like a monk. Eventually she warmed up to the idea, and was tearing through a panoply of meats like a seasoned pro.

I have no idea how they get those grills cleand off, but at the end the amount of carbonized meat n' marinade on there was impressive. MOST impressive.

Afterwards, we headed to Pixel Barrel world HQ to watch some Dr. Who, drink some cocoa and eat some cake. We watched Rememberance of the Daleks, which was apparently the final Dr. Who before the great drought, and the Five Doctors, which was really "Three Doctors and a Guy in a Wig". We also played a bit of Wii Fit, which was surprisingly enjoyable. I've got to get me one of those.

By the time the festivities wrapped, got [livejournal.com profile] redeem147 home, and returned to Mill-Town ourselves, it was 4 a.m., which is late for old people.

  • 12:03 Just because it's on a Who fanvid does not make a Nickelback song any good. This is science! #

We're not allowed to throw physical objects at them (they're still considered "citizens"), but I tend to have a small moment to be glad that they're allowed to enjoy their addiction and I'm allowed to enjoy air.

Starwars.com is publishing this week several articles about the 30th Anniversary of the Star Wars Holiday Special .

In addition to that one, they also have an interview with the actress who played Chewie's son, and with the co-author of the much loved show.

There's an article on collecting the Holiday Special, which includes an issue of Starlog with Bea Arthur on the cover (and when the hell did you ever expect to read THAT sentence?), a Jefferson Starship single, and a Boba Fett figure.

Good times. Man, thank God I was only 5 and wouldn't have cared.

The only thing worse that being left out of the discussion of what to do for a Christmas party (and good timing on that, btw. Restaurants NEVER fill up in mid December) is finding out that the final decision is a bad one.

I mean, the first choice was The Keg, which is a mediocre steakhouse at best. So the fallback was another cheesy chain bistro. Is imagination dead? I mean, if you're coming in from out of town, you might have an excuse for picking a franchise place. But if it's the town you live in, surely you can suggest one or two good family owned places for a meal, right?

Feh.

Yesterday was a quiet day. After getting our snows on for the season, Cynra went off to the Ashley sale and I came home to slack in front of the xbox. We took in Quantum of Solace in the afternoon (and, man, are fuel cells unstable in Bolivia).

The end of the film was a bit of a mess, and things just kept going on a bit senselessly, especially one piece at the end that, while a very nice homage to an early film, made no sense.

Plus, as I'd already complained about, no Watchmen or NuTrek trailers.

Today was a quieter day. We went downtown to visit the new AGO with [livejournal.com profile] redeem147. Of course, so did several thousand other people.

So that got put aside. We wandered up and down Queen West a bit, visiting an HMV and Pages and, of course, the Snail. The Snail was having a post-renovation sale, so I got a few issues of recent comics, Full Frontal Nerdity: Epic Fail, and this:

It's cute.

We're waiting on an insurance refund from some dental work, so I didn't go to Hairy T for an old D&D thingy they've got I want.

I did some shopping while Cynra placed some window film, and when I got home I threw the first snowball of the season at her.

Well, between MGK.com and [livejournal.com profile] multiplexer, I almost feel sorry for not buying a shitty American car.

"Sure you got a safe and fuel efficient vehicle. But now the world will be plunged into a new dark age! Ha ha ha!"
