Let's bring it back down to earth today, gentle readers, but not too much. Instead of mighty spheres clashing in the skies, we find ourselves in a little sliver of surburbia.
In the fall of '64, ABC and CBS showed the world the possibilities inherent in parallel development. Both of them launched sitcoms based around horrific inhabitants of suburbia.
The TIffany Network featured The Munsters. The Munsters were an amalgam of the Universal monsters, ensconced in suburbia (1313 Mockingbird Lane) with a pet dragon named Spot. Herman and Lily, Grampa, and Eddie and Marilyn have thrilled millions over the years, and grown into a force to be reckoned with in pop culture (and far left politics; well, Grandpa at least ).
ABC launched The Addams Family. Based on the macabre cartoons of Charles 'Chas' Addams, the Addams were a ookier family. Parents Gomez & Morticia raised children Pugsley and Wednesday with help from Grandmama, cousin Itt and Uncle Fester (and handyman Thing).
Both of these families, the ultimate in the wacky neighbours, have gone onto success in tv, film, and esoteric licenses (God, I'd kill for a copy of the Addams Family pinball game). But in the end, only one can arise triumphant in the arena of Hoo'd Win!

Edit: Ouch.

Date: 2007-10-25 04:54 pm (UTC)I have to admit, as a youth I loved their "dragster", although I was always a bigger fan of Gomez and Morticia.

Least, that's how TBG always presented it.
