Some French guy* talks about Steve Ditko. Interesting article. This is part 1, the remaining 6 are also on YouTube.

[livejournal.com profile] papajoemambo told me about it on Thursday, and here it is.

*Joke. JOKE!

My introduction to Ditko was in one of those Marvel "Jumbo size" albums. And it wasn't spiderman. It wasn't even a character that's listed on his wikipedia page. It was probably just a one-off to fill out space in the album. The story was a sort of Batman-y type of deal, I think about a man who went off into the mysterious east in order to learn the mysteries that would make him a supah-hero. In the end, I think the guy had weird sort of shadow/darkness powers and was basically a skulker character.

I just remember thing the art was really cool.

That's my earliest Ditko memory; if there's a Kirby/Ditko dichotomy like there's a cats/dogs dichotomy, then I guess I'm more of a Ditko guy than a Kirby guy.

Might have been in DC jumbo album (did they do them too?), but it don't think it was the Question. I think the character became a devotee/avatar of Kali or Siva or something, and might have been called The Scarab? Or something like that?

I'm pretty certain it wasn't the Question -- but the memory's hazy... perhaps it was after all...
