Hey. Is it possible to burn a music CD with a data file on it?

The makers of more than a few CD burners seem to think so, including iOmega.

And now I just realized that I haven't quite answered your question. As far as I can tell from a very cursory think-through, I'd say the answer ought to be "yes" in any case.

iTunes won't let you do it.

Toast 7 will, however. I keep coming back to that Toast product, don't I?

Yep -- you would. If you're duping an existing disk, then you /might/ be able to do it without Toast. You can try using Disk Utility to make a disk image directly from your CD: insert your CD, start Disk Utility, and then choose File>New>Disk Image from [Device]. If it allowed you to do that, then you'd have a DMG with the contents of the original media which you then might be able to burn onto a backup CD media.

However, I don't know whether OSX's own burner functionality will create the magic needed to build a music CD out of the final product or not. Somehow, I doubt it.

Wow, I am old. I remember when CDs with data tracks were a big deal. ^.^

Yes, yes it is.
