Tell me: The Great Heist Movies
Aug. 14th, 2006 05:16 pmHeyo. Cynra & I wanna do a movie night of heist movies. We wanna do Inside Man, because we just bought it and really like it, and The Usual Suspects because it's my favourite movie ever. Anyone got any other good ideas?

Date: 2006-08-14 10:28 pm (UTC)BANDITS, with Bruce Willis and Billy Bob Thornton, is a great Heist Film, though it's more a crime spree than a single, well-plotted Caper. Still, it's clever and fun.
The Thomas Crown Affair -- I regret I've only seen the remake, but, hey, Pierce Brosnan.
And for a more whimsical mood...
NATIONAL TREASURE. Yes, it's over the top, historically dubious, and frnakly outright silly in places -- but you want clever people planning intricate, impossible heists? This movie has two DIFFERENT groups going after the SAME impossible target at the SAME time -- and that's just in the first 30 minutes!
HUDSON HAWK. Yeah, I know, I'm one of half-a-dozen people on the PLANET who liked that film. But it'd be a fun cap to a night of capers.

Date: 2006-08-14 11:07 pm (UTC)Easily one of the best crime movies of all time. Great direction. Great characters. Everything about that movie is simply spectacular.

Date: 2006-08-15 12:11 am (UTC)I have National Treasure.
I refuse to come if it's Ocean's Eleven, the remake. Julia Roberts. Ick.
There's Cool Money. With da Marsters. Which isn't available in North America, nor ever shown in Toronto where it was filmed. But I'm not bitter.

What other version would there be?

Most of the standard heist movies I know of have been mentioned already...
Date: 2006-08-15 12:44 am (UTC)So how about some non-standard ones?
Time Bandits, Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Date: 2006-08-15 03:06 pm (UTC)- Heist (how could people miss this?) with Hackman, Rebecca Pidgeon, Danny DeVito, Ricky Jay, and Delroy Lindo. It's Mamet, so you know the dialogue's gonna crackle. (House Of Games and Spanish Prisoner are two close cousins of the Heist film: the Big Con film, and they're also good.)
- The Score with DeNiro, Norton, Brando, and Angela Bassett, directed by Frank Oz (sic). This is a quiet little heist picture with great performances, set in Montreal!
- The Hot Rock with Redford and Segal: it's a bit dated, but has some classic moments.
- Sneakers with Redford, Kingsley, Ackroyd, et al: again, it's a bit dated, but has some classic moments ("Oh Marty! They're not that organized!").
