Tell me: The Great Heist Movies

Heyo. Cynra & I wanna do a movie night of heist movies. We wanna do Inside Man, because we just bought it and really like it, and The Usual Suspects because it's my favourite movie ever. Anyone got any other good ideas?

Snatch. Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. Layer Cake. Ocean's Eleven. All good heist films.

As long as its the real Ocean's 11.

Don't forget Resevoir Dogs.

[identity profile] eddyfate.livejournal.com 2006-08-14 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Right, the original one. Good catch.

[identity profile] athelind.livejournal.com 2006-08-14 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I like both versions of O11 -- I just don't think of'em as the same movie. Same with the Italian Jobs. Give Ocean's 12 a miss, though.

BANDITS, with Bruce Willis and Billy Bob Thornton, is a great Heist Film, though it's more a crime spree than a single, well-plotted Caper. Still, it's clever and fun.

The Thomas Crown Affair -- I regret I've only seen the remake, but, hey, Pierce Brosnan.

And for a more whimsical mood...
NATIONAL TREASURE. Yes, it's over the top, historically dubious, and frnakly outright silly in places -- but you want clever people planning intricate, impossible heists? This movie has two DIFFERENT groups going after the SAME impossible target at the SAME time -- and that's just in the first 30 minutes!

HUDSON HAWK. Yeah, I know, I'm one of half-a-dozen people on the PLANET who liked that film. But it'd be a fun cap to a night of capers.

Deano, baybee.

[identity profile] vonandmoggy.livejournal.com 2006-08-14 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm partial to the remake of the Thomas Crown Affair, with Pierce Brosnan...though I'm not sure if it counts as a heist movie or not.

(And, for the record, I think it's the only remake I've ever liked...)

[identity profile] vonandmoggy.livejournal.com 2006-08-14 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, yes, and someone else said Ocean's 11! Good choice...the original, though, for sure.

The Italian Job, either version.

Where Eagles Dare

Heat

No its the one that takes place in an alpine castle and features Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood.

Ocean's 11 and Foolproof

[identity profile] tymen.livejournal.com 2006-08-14 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked Steven Soderbergh's Ocean's 11, the actors all look like they had a great time making the movie. But I recommend Foolproof with Ryan Reynolds. Excellent Canadian made heist movie.

I recommend "Things To Do in Denver When You are Dead", I really enjoyed that film, and I think it's gone under the radar a bit.

"Rififi" is an absolute MUST for any heist movie night, and I'll second the original "Italian Job" (haven't seen the remake...kind of like the original too much to really give it a fair shake, I think.)

"Topkapi" is another classic and if you like the obscure, there's "Grand Slam" from Blue Underground.

[identity profile] skaiser.livejournal.com 2006-08-14 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Rififi has the single best shot bank robbery ever. Period.

Easily one of the best crime movies of all time. Great direction. Great characters. Everything about that movie is simply spectacular.

[identity profile] thetathx1138.livejournal.com 2006-08-14 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I got it on a whim and loved it.

[identity profile] cargoweasel.livejournal.com 2006-08-15 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
Rififi is the best ever. Ever see 'Bob le Flambeur'?

[identity profile] elissa-carey.livejournal.com 2006-08-14 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
The Italian Job, Reservoir Dogs, Ocean's Eleven, Heat, The Thomas Crown Affair: all highly seconded, thirded, etc.

I'll also add Boondock Saints for the hell of it.

[identity profile] thetathx1138.livejournal.com 2006-08-14 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Interesting. I don't know that I'd call it a heist flick per se but there are definitely plenty of structual similarities.

Maybe toss "A Fish Called Wanda" onto the pile.

[identity profile] thorkell.livejournal.com 2006-08-14 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Heat.

And... uh...

[identity profile] redeem147.livejournal.com 2006-08-15 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Does The Pink Panther count, since it's a jewel thief rather than a bank heist? I refer of course to the Sellers' version.

I have National Treasure.

I refuse to come if it's Ocean's Eleven, the remake. Julia Roberts. Ick.

There's Cool Money. With da Marsters. Which isn't available in North America, nor ever shown in Toronto where it was filmed. But I'm not bitter.

[identity profile] creativedv8tion.livejournal.com 2006-08-15 12:36 am (UTC)(link)

I refer of course to the Sellers' version.

What other version would there be?

[identity profile] redeem147.livejournal.com 2006-08-15 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, like I wasn't going to mention that one.

(Anonymous) 2006-08-15 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
The original (and probably best ever) heist movie: Kubrick's _The Killing_.

Your _film noir_ pal,
T.C. Badass

Big Deal on Madonna Street (one of the all-time best heists)
Gonin (post-"bubble" Japanese heist flick)

Most of the standard heist movies I know of have been mentioned already...

[identity profile] creativedv8tion.livejournal.com 2006-08-15 12:44 am (UTC)(link)

So how about some non-standard ones?

Time Bandits, Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Some of my favourites:

- Heist (how could people miss this?) with Hackman, Rebecca Pidgeon, Danny DeVito, Ricky Jay, and Delroy Lindo. It's Mamet, so you know the dialogue's gonna crackle. (House Of Games and Spanish Prisoner are two close cousins of the Heist film: the Big Con film, and they're also good.)

- The Score with DeNiro, Norton, Brando, and Angela Bassett, directed by Frank Oz (sic). This is a quiet little heist picture with great performances, set in Montreal!

- The Hot Rock with Redford and Segal: it's a bit dated, but has some classic moments.

- Sneakers with Redford, Kingsley, Ackroyd, et al: again, it's a bit dated, but has some classic moments ("Oh Marty! They're not that organized!").

Reservoir Dogs?

Oldies but Goodies

[identity profile] justinjacobson.livejournal.com 2006-08-15 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
If you haven't seen The Great Train Robbery or The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3, do yourself a favor and rent/Netflix them.
