In the turbulent decade known as the 1980s, there were many vicious rivalries: The USA vs the USSR, Releasing New Coke vs Common Sense, and Bryan Adams vs Good Taste. But, forgotten in the past is this epic confrontation, between a two man UK pop duo and... A two man UK pop duo.

Yes, the epic rivalry between Tears for Fears and The Pet Shop Boys will surely go down in musical history as one of the quietest. Unlike, say, Blur and Oasis, or the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, there was no petulant sniping in the press, no duelling singles or exhortations for the other band to get AIDS. In fact, it's not too much to say that they may have each been entirely completely ignorant of the other's careers. Not likely, as they probably both went to parties and stuff, but it's possible.

Still! We don't care about quiet and peace! We want WAR! So, who wins? Whose cuisine reigns supreme?

Fight!

Anyone who votes "Tears for Fears" clearly does not remember the glorious militant hymn that was "GO West". Or how cooly the Boys handled a raving Ross Ackland in the back of their car in their video for the Elvis cover.

Or we've heard "Always On My Mind" so often that we're going to dynamite the local radio station that plays it eighty times a day.

So... you're saying they were insanely popular and well-loved by the population, while Tears were Fears were fugitives from mob justice, liked only by powerless misfits who dream of violence?

Is that it?

;)

Nooooo...I'm saying that if I never hear "Always On My Mind" again, it'll be too damn soon, which is why I voted for Tears for Fears. I don't hear "Shout" as often, so I am less biased towards TFF.

Although I wish they'd form the 80s pop-group version of Voltron and go kill Coldplay. Why is smooth bland mush so incredibly popular?

I don't hear "Shout" as often

Yes, but back in the 80s.... *shudder*

And I resent the implication that I'm "powerless." My superpower of super-adhesive mucus is perfectly legitimate and useful!

Oooh. I had a character like that for Champions, back in the day. Phlegmraiser.

See, this is a rough one. As much as I love the Pet Shop Boys far more than any straight man should, Tears For Fears did rule over the 80's.

I guess it boils down to a simple question of what is the competition?

In a fight? Tears for Fears, easily. The Pet Shop Boys couldn't take my grandma in a fight.

In making totally gay yet heart tugging music? Pet Shop Boys. Hands down.

At a Music Career? Considering in the 90's Tears For Fears kicked out the other guy and turned all hippy crap, and the Pet Shop Boys continued to crank out totally gay heart tugging music, I'd give it to PSB.

Whose cuisine reigns supreme?

Dude, they're both from ENGLAND. The losers if they decide to fight in Kitchen Stadium is whoever eats the food.

This pretty much says it.

The Pet Shop Boys were a duo.
Tears For Fears were one guy with his sidekick.

Sorry, I deleted my comment because I clearly got the wrong end of the stick on TFF's history -- but, what you say above is pretty much the gist of it, IMO...

Like Batman. So you should vote for them. :-)

Pet Shop Boys, clearly. Although TTF have brooding angst on their side, PSB are wily and clever.

Definite tossup between the two.

PSB wins b/c "It's a Sin" is one of my personal life anthems.

Well, that's just the strongest reason. Tears for Queers have some good songs ("Head over Heels" is pretty darn nifty, IMO), but nowhere near as many as PSB.
