Jan. 26th, 2006 12:40 pmSo, apparently there's some surprise that a party that billed itself as theologically pure and morally uncorrupted defeated the incumbent in a recent election.
Apparnetly many people are afraid of what sorts of shenanigans this religiously oriented party might be up to, and how this might affect relations with their more powerful, cranky neighbours who are already testy about terrorism.
In other news, Hamas won the Palestinian elections.

I do not envy them that job one bit, especially since Iran is making life very hard for the entire region. Although when the ayatollah realizes that he's put himself into a position of Mutually Assured Destruction and hence has to be NICE to Israel, the look on his face is going to be priceless!

Date: 2006-01-27 04:15 am (UTC)I'm just boggled by this. Hamas (Palestine), Hezbollah (Lebanon) and the Muslim Brotherhood (Egypt) seem to have a lot of support. I wonder how much of this is because they've stepped up and provided some of the essential services that the corrupt governments of their countries have neglected.
Sad, because they do engage in some very nasty business along with their good business. Can't say if they're worse than the devils we know, and they'd probably be forced to moderate a bit if they were actually in power. Or they could be like the nutjob in Iran who will likely lead to many tens of thousands of deaths by the time he's done.
If the governments of these nations weren't so lousy, then there'd be far less reason for these parties to be blocked from running or politicking at all, because they wouldn't have a natural constituency.
