Karma-karma-karma-karma-karma girl
Sep. 12th, 2007 11:01 amSo, finished Karma Girl. I'm contemplating doing a full BG on the three of them (Soon I Will Be, Dr. Brain & KG), but I'm far too lazy to do that.
Anyway, it was an enjoyable book. Everytime anyone saw me reading it I got the same reaction: "you're reading chicklit?"
Yeah, I read chicklit. Big whoop. I even read the first few Shopaholic books, if only because the covers were pretty and they were convenient.
Anyway, Karma Girl is the story of a intrepid girl reporter who discovers her fiance in bed with her maid of honour an hour before the wedding, and then discovers they're both supers. Archenemies, as a matter of fact. She takes the pain and turns it into journalism, writing a story exposing both their secret ids.
This becomes a habit of hers, and she goes on to Bigtime (that's the name of the big city) and something goes terribly wrong.
So, things go on and she must learn to love again, yadda yadda yadda.
Overall, it was much better than I expected it to be. The main problem with having a person who is trying to uncover the secret identity of supervillains and superheroes is that, well, there are only so many characters in the book.
It’s difficult not to go “well, this character must be that one, and this guy HAS to be this one, and…” although if you read a bit on auto-pilot and let the story of the characters flow through, you might get a surprise or two.
The book does make good use of the secret identity trope, especially how silly it seems that a pair of glasses and a spit curl could defeat an investigative reporter for 50 years, Silver age silliness aside.
Thankfully, the book avoids becoming mired in an ‘idiot plot’. Rarely does anyone forget a useful piece of information in the book, and most of the fertheluva minutes are caused by characters acting very appropriately for a romance novel, which this is.
Apparently, it’s the first book in a trilogy, so I’ll keep an eye out for the next couple.
Apparently, this isn’t the last book I’m gonna be reading about superheroes; someone recommended Flyboy Action Figure Comes with Gasmask, and it turns out I still have
luciancarter’s copy. Whoops.
I’ll finish that off (once I'm done WWZ) and get it back to him.
