A) Car-pooling with your wife may save on gas, but it sucks when you're sick and want to go home.

B) Andrew Rilston really hates NuWho. I mean REALLY. More than [livejournal.com profile] pyat and Steven Barringer squished together in some sort of amalgamated Who Hating Monster.

edit: Bi) [livejournal.com profile] andrewhickey also seems to dislike it, but they may be, just like Andrew, very cleverly likeing it.

It should come as little surprise to you that I"m somewhat in accord with Mr Rilstone's thoughts on the matter... If Captain Jake spontaneously combusted, you'd see no shed tears from me.

Indeed. And you're right. That was a hideously bad slip-of-the-finger. Bah.

I don't hate NuWho! I hate Aliens!

Once one gets past the foolish notion that Cameron's "Aliens" is the best exemplar of the franchise, things get a lot better... 8)

Well, I don't even hate Aliens, but I've built up a reputation as doing so.

FIncher's "Alien 3" is my favourite of the three, because it has a real, human connection to its characters that is almost entirely absent from Scott's original (not a tremendous surprise from Scott's style of film-making, really). In retrospect, I even prefer Jeunet's fourth to Cameron's second.

That's not to say Cameron's is a bad film; I don't think it is. But I think all the other three have qualities that have more legs than Cameron's, which, in the end, is all about the military bravado, the 'splosions, and the glossy grandeur of it all.

I don't believe in new Who. I believe in one long-running series since 1963 with a rather lengthy hiatus.

Just ask those haters what they thought about John Nathan Turner in 1985.

Wow, did that guy ever even watch Doctor Who before the hiatus? All the stuff he's complaining about as being "different" either showed up in the series before, or something much like it.

His Torchwood bashing is a bit more coherent, but complaining that they swear on one show but not the other? There's a different demographic. It's an unfortunate bit of society that swearing is something that you don't let people bellow a certain age be exposed to (not that they won't do it on their own of course), but it's perfectly understandable.

And of course he misses out on the one thing that actually is worse in post hiatus Doctor Who, namely all the lame fart jokes.

Ok, just Slitheen, but there have been a lot of them.

And no, no it's not.

I completely agree. I really enjoyed the first 9th Doctor episode, found the 2nd episode far too Douglas Adams for my taste (which is admittedly not all that difficult) and loathed the next episode for all the fart jokes. However, the 2nd fart joke episode was somewhat less bad, and Dalek and the rest of that season was fabulous.

I've actually never heard of it before (but wikipedia, being an excellent source of all things Doctor Who swiftly remedied that), but I can't imagine that I would have enjoyed it.

I do not hate Nu-Who. I hate the final three installments of the third Season of Nu-Who. (Actually, I hate the final twenty minutes of the final installment of the Nu-Who.) You might as well read someone's critique of "Phantom Menace" and say that they hate "Star Wars".

This happens. I wrote a piece that I specifically labeled as "a qualified recantation" in which I said I liked the first three Harry Potter books but found the final part a disappointment, and got called a Rowling-hater. And my savaging of "Revenge of the Sith" got me labelled as a Lucas Apologist because I mentioned that it also had some redeeming features.

My comments on Seasons 1 and 2 are on the blog, if you care.

I kinda like the new Who, but Davies' episodes tend to seem weak to me.

Dear gods, what a deeply unimpressive criticism of NuWho. I found myself agreeing with about one point in five or six (for example, I agreed that Last of the Timelords was junk), but found the remaining objections ranging from baffling to silly.
