The paladin is first introduced in Supplement I to OD&D (Greyhawk) in 1975, although it's a slightly different class than the one that appeared later in the AD&D Players Handbook in 1977. The OD&D paladin isn't a spellcaster, for example, and the class isn't technically limited by race, although the text doesn't specifically allow the possibility of dwarf, elf, or hobbit/halfling paladins.
In AD&D, the Paladin was a Fighter subclass in the Players Handbook. Unearthed Arcana added the Cavalier as its own class, and the Paladin became a subclass of that.
