Uday & his fiance Posh (aka The Lt) took in Cloverfield w/ Cynra and I.

I have no idea what movie other people were expecting to see, but it was good. It was very short, really. 85 minutes.

But the story they told was exactly the story that was promised: A group of friends are in NY when it is attacked by something horrid.

Personally, I would have been perfectly happy to see nothing of the monster; the movie wasn't about it. It was about them. If they got close enough to see it, it should have been close enough that, well, that was that.

We had a chatty group of idiots behind us (THAT'S why we don't go see movies on opening night!) who seemed to be the perfect people to sit behind someone you don't like, in another theatre.

I am troubled by the reviews that tell me the friends are boring and unmemorable.

Hiho,

The reviews are right. IMO, anyhow. I wanted to cheer out loud for the monster every time they came close to it.

You didn't give the idiots behind you the Bitter Guy StareTM? In the past I usually try that trick, and it works a lot of the time. The idiot film talker is one of the three primary reasons I don't go to movies in cinemas any more. (The others being the stench of barely cleaned up spilled softdrinks and popcorn, the horribly cramped seating in most plexes, and the insanely loud rock-concert volume levels.) There's one theatre left in town that the missus and I actually like to go to, but typically we just rent DVDs of stuff we want to see.

Just my opinion, but they left out two words from that promise: "utterly unlikeable". After 20 minutes or so, I spent the whole movie wanting every one of the characters to die already. JJ needs to learn that if you want your characters to be the driving force behind a movie, he should make at least one of them interesting and likeable.

Hiho,

Really? You didn't even find Camera-Dufus unlikable? "You guys obviously want privacy so I'm going to spy on you and try to record you and then tell EVERYBODY at the party about you having slept together." This is loyalty?

Hiho,

Meh... As portrayed, he seemed to be following them more out of stupidity than loyalty by that point. Kinda like a stray puppy that got picked up and just keep tagging along mindlessly.
