I'd like you all to go scrolling through your friends list. Take a look through them.

Now think. Is there anyone on there who hates each other?

Okay, maybe not HATES, but don't get along? Have had issues? Difficulties?

(and if you've got [livejournal.com profile] thirdelement, it doesn't count. He hates everyone.)

Looking over it, I see at least two on mine. Maybe another two, but not really.

It's odd. Sure, some of them don't qualify as 'friends' (I always say, it should be 'chums' list. Or 'nodding acquaintances' list). And you have to wonder how much actual animosity is left there.

And it does look like the war is mostly won. Which we can only thank God for. Even if it was done for wrong reasons (whatever reasons Ari puts forward at the next conference), it was a good thing. Hussein was one of the really bad guys out there.

I just wish they'd been able to do it without 'accidentally' lobbing missiles and tank shells into press buildings, but hey.

I wonder if we can hope to see some similar regime change in Africa. Some of those central bastards give bloodthirsty dictators a bad name. If Idi Amin is going "hey, man, you gotta relax" it's bad.

I've had a line running through my head for a couple weeks: "If it must be done, let it be done quickly". Where the hell is that from?

Sounds like a B5 quote to me *shrugs*

Possibly Hamlet? Or Macbeth? Something like...

I'm intrigued now.

OK, all a Google search brings up is the Westray Mine disaster inquiry... I must be searching for the wrong quote. http://www.littletechshoppe.com/ns1625/960527am.html

Ah HA!

Macbeth, Act I, Scene 7.

[Hautboys and torches. Enter a Sewer, and divers
Servants with dishes and service, and pass over the
stage. Then enter MACBETH]

MACBETH
If it were done when 'tis done, then 'twere well
It were done quickly: if the assassination
Could trammel up the consequence, and catch
With his surcease success; that but this blow
Might be the be-all and the end-all here,
But here, upon this bank and shoal of time,
We'ld jump the life to come. But in these cases
We still have judgment here; that we but teach
Bloody instructions, which, being taught, return
To plague the inventor: this even-handed justice
Commends the ingredients of our poison'd chalice
To our own lips.

Hmmmm.

Hell, there are people who have me on their friends list that I can't stand.

Hmm. I actually had that quote running through my mind the first few days of the war, too. It's originally from the bible (John 13:27 is where I found it): Jesus said to to Judas Iscariot at the Last Supper basically right after Judas decided to betray Jesus (Or 'Satan entered into him', as some versions put it)

In any case, I'm not entirely sure if the attribution makes it more or less appropriate... I did know the source even as I was thinking it though. (In the interest of full disclosure, I'm not a particularly pious or even Christian person, at this point, but after 18 years of church going and Sunday school, you pick up some things.)
