I'm amazed. A million swords hanging on a million walls, and she just happens to find the only one that's actually sharp enough to cut people. o.O
(Ok, probably not the only one, but most of the swords I see for sale around town are 'display' swords - stainless steel or chromed, and pointy-tipped, but blunt edged..
True, but the article also mentioned "An off-duty firefighter who was pumping gas was cut on the arm when he tried to intervene" - and I'd assume he was wearing a coat, given how cold it's been, so he was cut through clothing.
Of course, that doesn't explicitly say he was cut by the sword..
Any sword has one good killing swing in it - it's what happens to the sword after that swing that gets interesting. Some of the "display" swords will bend or even shatter. Even a good-quality blade will get messed up if it hits anything hard (like another blade - movie-style sword fights just did not happen because the blades would be notched all to crap).
Well, there are actually a number of interesting asides and even plot points in some old period sagas about combatants' swords getting notched past usefulness during a fight, so edge on edge apparently did happen but was discouraged since you don't want to ruin your foe-sticker.
One viking saga (wish I could remember which) involved the protagonist notching a sword that he borrowed from a friend during a fight and having to go through all sorts of shenanigans to get it fixed since he is honor bound to do so.

At any rate, glad nobody was killed: weird.
