Oy.
Well, I kinda new it was gonna be ugly today. So last night, I strapped on my toque and gloves and went outside to shovel the drive & walk.
Getting ahead of the game, you see.
Well, it was, as the kids like to say, a complete waste of time.
Overnight, about 20 centimetres of snow fell. Which meant that my carefully shovelled drive served only to show where the driveway was, as it was lower than the surrounding snow.
Joy.
The plan was I would take the 7:40 GO to TO, TTC it up to work, and get there in the nick of time.
The best-laid schemes o' mice an 'men gang aft agley, as the poet said. It took us about 45 minutes to get the car out of the driveway. Okay, no, but up the crescent and onto the road. I had to literally push the car up Secord Ct, and then I had to dig us out (wiht the kind assistance of a neighbour) of the great wall of snow tossed up by the snowplow.
All this time, my evil brain was saying "you know, you can just call in sick. Say you hit your head on hte bumper pushing the car. It would be sooo easy."
But no, I thought, they need me.
I also thought about a sketch where someone would have a standard good angle/bad angle, but the good angle would be played by Pierre Trudeau, and would fill him with self doubt.
"Of course you can call in sick. Obviously, they need you." "What's that supposed to mean?" "Well, just look at how busy they were yesterday. Obviously they'd be lost without you." "I'm a contributing member of the team! I work hard!" "Of course you do. {drags on cigarette} So you keep on pushing."
In the end, I got onto the train (40 minutes late) and onto the bus (which was also late, but considering the bus schedule, it made not so much the difference).
The company VP was on the bus as well, and while we took the elevator up we kibbitzed about the woman on the bus who lacked an internal monologue.
Work was the usual assortment of angry customers, waived fees, strange skits for the company kickoff, and free pizza (happy holidays!).
Of course, it was after work that the fun started. Snra was unable to get the car out to pick me up (she couldn't get the car up the driveway because of snow issues), so I had to get a ride. To the dealership.
To pick up my new car.
Oh, you wondered if I was gonna get to that, didja?
Well, as of tonight, yours truly is the owner of a 2005 Smart Fourtwo Coupe, Passion model, with a silver Tridium frame and silver body panels.
Finally.
Good radio. Good snow tires, too. We'll likely drive it to Ancestral Casa Mohareb for the festivities (because, hey, snow tires).
Of course, first I had to get home. As I mentioned it has the snow tires, so the control was good. In fact, I got home with no problems, where I found Snra was still trying to get it up the driveway.
Our driveway has a positively STUPID angle. Jesu, it's like 20 degrees or summat. Thankfully, one of our neighbours came by to help. With a little help (and a LOT more diggin') we got both cars into the driveway. I'd gotten my hopes up when I saw the cul de sac had been plowed, but it was a half assed plowing.
Anyway, tomorrow is final packing, one or two gifts, and off to the folks.
We'll be in Kingston Christmas day and some of Boxing Day, and back there for the 28th for Mater & Pater's 35th anniversary.
Any Kingston Folk wanna grab an afternoon cider the 28th?
Anyway, yes. Cold day, new car. Snow on the ground.
If'n I don't see you before then, Merry Christmas.
