MPIX on Demand has all the original Trek movies on show. So, I watched (semi-watched) TMP. Man, the orbital transporter tech was hot.

Anyway, I can understand why some might have found it less than engaging. I remember having the Happy Meal.

Hee hee. Spock said "closed orifice".

The Director's Cut is actually quite good.

Star Trek: The Still Life.

And the Director's Cut takes a film legendary for padding and poor pacing... and adds more padding.

It's a pity that this wasn't the film released in theaters. It's also a pity that this was probably the last time Star Trek attempted to be "serious" science fiction.

I don't know, the failure of this movie DID spawn "Wrath of Khan", certainly the richest Star Trek movie ever made and definitely a superb film.

It still sucks less than the original cut. Admittedly, that's a backhanded compliment, but the Director's Cut is certainly a better film.

The Wrath of Khan is a fine film, no question, but it's not what I'd call a serious science fiction film. And its much-deserved success has made it the template for all Trek films since, which I see as a bad thing. I mean, how many would-be Wraths of Khan do we need in the canon?

Add a dash of political thriller and you have The Undiscovered Country, which I think we needed.

I like The Motion Sickness, but think you should have jokingly made the main title START WRECK.

That would almost be MAD magazine level punnage.

Oh Pollmaster, DC has thrown down the gauntlet for a Hoo'd Win: they show promo art of Batman bitchslapping Rorshach.

We must know hoo'd win!

I don't know that "Khan" was the template at first. III and IV are very different movies. V is basically an extended TOS episode.

Basically, once Paramount started hemorraging money, THAT'S when they went back to the Khan well, really. "The fans liked this, let's repeat it" is typical studio-think.

True enough all on counts (including the V = TOS episode, a viewpoint I share and which I think makes me dislike the movie far less than I should). I tend to forget the other parts of the Spock Trilogy, because they all blend into one story in my age-addled brain. But your point is correct and it suggests a number of things to me about why my love of Trek has waned over the years, despite my best efforts to fan the embers back into flame.

Well, hopefully Paramount is ALMOST done with the strip-mining. Once you put out Star Trek coffins (no, I'm not kidding, they exist) there's not much else you can brand in terms of merchandise.

V would have made an excellent episode, cause then Shatner wouldn't have directed...

Which jokey subtitle for Star Trek: The Motion Picture do you prefer?

Although it absolutely requires that one be fairly well versed in ST:ToS to understand it, I've always liked

"Where Nomad Has Gone Before."

You and I found it in the same place. I'm assuming since everybody's griping about DC messing with Watchmen that it's an image from the Distinguished Competition.

Even better, I believe that the DKR Batman! And in the background you can see a Superwoman who is clearly so depressed about her flat chest she has compensated by stuffing an entire box of donuts down her blouse!

To be fair, V is much, much better when viewed on the small screen. I won't claim that Shatner is a brilliant director, but he's far from the worst I've ever seen and his particular style is better suited to TV than the big screen.

Coffins? Sheesh.

I hope the strip mining is done, but I'm so cynical now about stuff like this that it's very hard to muster the energy to care most of the time.

The Nomad episode is the one the 80s band Information Society used for 90% of their sampling. I always assumed they got permission to sample that episode, and so stretched it over a half dozen songs and two albums.

I so loved that band.

Star Drek: The Missing Plotline (assuming you want to stick to ST:TMP format).

Also, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock leads (at least in my mind) to
Star Trek IV: The Search For Whales
Star Trek V: The Search For God
Star Trek VI: The Search For Justice
Star Trek VII: The Search For Kirk
Star Trek VIII: The Search for Borg
