While I didn't get to go on the road this weekend, Cynra & I did take in Blade Runner: the Final Cut today. It's showing at the Regent on Mt. Pleasant. Good print, and very enjoyable. Still awesome.

In other news, the Post's reviewer reveals they actually haven't seen the film before, since the voiceover was ditched in the director's cut released fifteen years ago.

I really like this quote:
There's also a sudden cameo by a unicorn, a confessional in the pouring rain by a Billy Idol look-alike carrying a dove in one hand and a homoerotic kiss of death.

Ohhh, you showed them,'Nessa! Roy Batty is 'a Billy Idol look-alike'.

Man, I hope they didn't pay for that review. It's almost as bad as something written by... well, you know who.

I'm not a huge fan of the film, but still, it's nice to see ignorant film critics aren't limited to America.

Wow. Obviously someone who had no idea what the movie was about even while watching it, or who never read PKD. I know it takes a little intelligence to follow the movie without a voiceover, but this isn't English Lit class. Jeez.

That's nothing, you should read some of the bad reviews of "The Fountain."

Now, granted, it's a dense movie and not to everyone's taste, but I can sum up most of the bad reviews I read this way:

"OOOOOOhmigawd there's like totally this giant tree in space. That's so stupid! Anybody who puts a tree in space is like totally retarded."

Made my blood boil.

Whereas my gripe with the movie was that it's story was melodramatic, paper-thin, and really didn't make a heck of a lot of sense. Now, pretty to look at, absolutely! Just not much substance beyond the prettiness.

Well, I disagree, but you're more articulate than 90% of America's film critics.

So it's an overly broad category! It's still true!

Wow... obviously at 0932, my caffeine had not fully settled into my system. How did I manage to leave out the 's' in News Flash, not once, but twice? Astounding.

I wish I were a paying member so I could edit my comment... 8)

Ha! Seeing Wendy Williams as the Flash would be ... interesting... who would you cast as Iris?

She also misquoted dialogue, if I'm not mistaken:

And the dialogue can get ridiculously melodramatic at times, like when one character comments of a replicant, "It's too bad he won't live? but then again, who does?"

I believe that should be SHE, thank-you! [/ comicbook guy's voice]

Quite.

She obviously had her pre-conceived judgements and didn't bother looking beyond that - what's that? be objective in a review? Boy, what a novel idea!

Reviews like this just reaffirm my dismissal of critics and their opinions in general. I don't need someone to tell me what to watch, especially not some main-stream 'normal' ;o)

What makes my blood boil most about this lame excuse for a review is how little she understands the things she's talking about. The POINT is that there are flying cars and ads for Atari. She's a film critic that doesn't understand symbolic metaphor, iconography, internal references, ironic distance, etc. I mean it's only basic film language afterall.
