I was rather frustrated with the show... because it could be good and it's almost good, but it seems to miss the mark on almost every level. From some of the interviews I've read with RTD, he seems to be aware of the problem, so I'm definitely going to give it a second try next season... especially since James Marsters is going to be in an episode or two.
It was a frustrating show. The first 6 ranged from OK to dreadful, the last episode was laughably horrible, and the 6 in the middle ranged from good to utterly brilliant, and IMHO better than anything ever done on Doctor Who, or most other SF&F shows (the best being "They Keep Killing Suzie", "Random Shoes", and (especially) "Out of Time"). Very frustrating.
The production team have as good as admitted that series one of Torchwood was rushed onto the screen, in the wake of the huge popularity of Doctor Who series one. The key staff were splitting their time between Who series two (itself somewhat rushed) and the set-up of this new show. That lack of focus and clear direction for the show is painfully obvious on the screen.
They've given themselves over a year to do series two, so I have high hopes that it will be much better,
Like it seems with the good Mr. Dansky, I had the most problems with "Cyberwoman," too. I kept thinking that the ST: TNG epsiode "I, Borg" did things a lot better.
