An intersting adaptation of the comic Mega-Event. They cut out all the DCU material in favour of making it a strictly Superman event. The animation was good, although they added strangely drawn cheekbones onto Superman's face, which made him look strange. The story was interesting, although I miss the "Four Supermen" plotline, but they've all been worked in in the intervening time. The Eradicator isn't quite as interesting a character now, without the strange grim n' gritty thing being as prevalant as it used to be, Steel is pretty much a standard guy, Cyborg Superman has a bit too much backstory, and they couldn't use Superboy if they wanted to.
The highlight was the documentary about the media and cultural reaction to the original Death of Superman comics story was released (favourite quote: "Nothing else in the world happened that day"). The preview of The Last Fontier is just un-necessary teasing. I hope they get it right; I can dig Neil Patrick Harris as The Flash.
Hot Fuzz was more awesome starring Pegg & Frost. It does for action films what Shaun did for Zombie films. Cynra & I assumed that Jessica Stevenson was the ex, and so the IMDB revelation that it was Cate Blanchett was amusing. The fact she recognized the guy who played Belloq as the priest was just annoying. Grr.
Cameos aside, the film was enjoyable, and the final gunfight was wonderfully put together; if you could splice that and the chase scene's in Death Proof together, it would be the perfect movie.

That bothered me the absolute most - it was a total distraction. Lois was very Lois-ish I must admit.
Overall, I was happy to see a step up from Y7 DCU - we saw blood, and sexual scenes, and heard people talk like we would talk.
I still have a hard time with the voices - I grew to love the DCAU voices.

Date: 2007-10-10 07:36 pm (UTC)I didn't like Doomsday for a couple of reasons. I understand that Superman has to get beaten up by Doomsday to die, but why didn't he grab him and fly out to space/the moon/wherever to fight him where there was no chance for any innocent bystanders to get hurt? Why throw each other through buildings (where people were working)? And then the fight at the end with him and clone where they're both spouting off about "caring for the people" and they're destroying Metropolis just as bad as the fight between Supes and Dooms. Didn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Fights aside, I did like how they reworked the story to stand alone, sans DCU extras, some of the reactions of people and such. But the two fights were so damn BIG and took up so much time, it was like a championship fight. Kind of like Superman was Rocky fighting Mr. T and mostly winning, then having to defend the title again. Hell, I think either fight in this movie lasted longer than a couple of Mike Tyson's championship bouts.
