Gaming, home life, and Dr. Thirteen
Sep. 24th, 2007 11:36 amThursday night was resumption of game. I was feeling a bit out of sorts (I think my body needs to ease into consuming a roti), but we got to do some murder investigating.
It’s interesting to deal with interrogating a witness when their lawyer’s in the room and knows we have an empathy on team. I wonder if real cops are using Facebook as much as we do in game?
Hurrah to the Finnish RPG fan who gave the GM candy for his game group. The Turkish Peppers (at least I think that’s what they’re called) were interesting, but the chocolate was downright hawesome. Also Huzzah for
kabael's boss for giving some Bella Sara boosters for Cynra. Afterwards, I headed up to
absinthe_dot_ca's to pick up a table they were giving us in advance of their move, and I picked up a gift for Cynra.
Weekend was busy. Because the furnace and AC are coming in on Friday, we have to clear out space in the basement, which consisted of mostly digging through boxes and disposing of things. A lot of stuff got cleared out, so hopefully they'll have room to do the install on Friday.
We had a couple more guys come by for tree quotes, and it sounds a lot better. One guy quoted us $800, but there seemed to be issues with what he was offering, and another gave us a quote of $1100 for pretty much what we're looking for.
There seems to be some divergence over if we can save the tree or not. I'm hoping we can.
There's a total bullshit column in the Star today about the land transfer tax TO wants to put in. The writers, two economics professors, say that it'll raise the cost of moving by 14%. That's a big scary number, right?
But unfortunately, that's as a percentage of the amount; since you already pay a real estate commission of 6% and 1% in provincial transfer taxes, going from 7% to 8% is an increase of 14%. The amount of your actual charge goes up by 1%.
They also say it will more heavily affect retirees downsizing to a smaller home. How? They'll pay a little more, but they'll likely be going to a less expensive home, and will probably be moving out of a home that's mostly, if not entirely, paid for.
Feh.
Conflicted on tonight; G33kdom is holding a H2 tournament in anticipation of the release of H3, but there’s a few hours of TV to watch (HIMYM and The Big Bang Theory, a new Nerd Sitcom and Heroes).
I could flip a coin, or I could just pick the option that lets me stay at home and take my pants off.
Have re-read Doctor 13 a few times since I got it. Such a totally awesome story, and you pick up stuff every time you re-read it. Like the Darwyn Cooke joke ("Living in Nova Scotia doesn’t make him dead..."), or how the Architects "are the ones who decide Who’s Who".
Overall, it’s totally awesome. Like when a group of ghost pirates, a vampire, and the haunted tank fight a group of nazi apes in a jungle in the middle of the Himalayas. At one point, a character actually does a wink at the camera. And how everyone refers to I… Vampire as I… Vampire, even if they don't mean to. Just delightful.
I really don’t know who the Architects are supposed to be (other than possibly Morrison, Giffen, Rucka and Johns, who are the authors of 52). The cover is hilarious, putting the Un-Wanteds (that’s what I’m calling them, but the license is available! Call my lawyer!) into the place of the Superfriends.
Chang and Azzarello did an interview that got scattered among a bunch of comix bloggers.
