Kitchen Nightmares
Sep. 24th, 2007 11:35 amOh, yeah: New TV last week.
Yankee version of Kitchen Nightmares. Meh. It's not bad, but strangely edited and feels as artificial as those rubber chickens.
I enjoy the original, but this fails to engage. Bringing in an announcer, instead of letting Ramsey narrate, feels totally unnecessary.
The structure is also totally off. The way it usually works, Ramsey comes in, eats dinner, looks at kitchen, figures out what’s wrong, maybe does a team building exercise or restructures menu or both, usually takes the chef to a local market to get fresh ingredients, and then they relaunch the restaurant, and boom.
In the Fox version, it was more he shows up, and then Paulie Fucknuts starts shouting at everyone. Hell, the chef even says "the ravioli is from Restaurant Depot, how do you think it’s going to be?"
WHY WASN'T HE TAKEN TO A LOCAL MARKET, RAMSEY!?!
Plus, they replace all the ovens and stoves. What? Nah, nah. Paulie Fucknuts should have had to sell his frickin’ Rolex collection to get a repairman in. Remember when Ramsey busted that one restauranteur into selling his Beemer to pay for upkeep? That’s the stuff.
Plus, there was no restructuring, no reexamination of what was going on. It seemed like "everything's fine, except Paulie Fucknuts is a moron with rage issues".
Watching Paulie threaten every bill collector with GBH was amusing. I liked how he grabbed the meat tenderizer to go after him, like he’s some special ed Gino version of Thor.

Date: 2007-09-24 07:49 pm (UTC)And on the British series, Ramsay only took them to local markets when they didn't understand the value of local produce and good food anyway. It was pretty obvious that the head chef knew his shit, and that taking Peter to a local market was a waste of time because he was a fucking idiot.
