This is a spoof! Read the "News headlines" at the bottom of the screen during the news presentation. It's just a horrible horrible spoof that is very well done.
Ok good because when I first saw it a couple weeks back I actually thought it was real because it looks so authentic. Using middleaged newsreaders really sold it because you'd expect more younger people to do something like this.
I mean, it's an interesting contrast between all the speculation of character death; sort of an eros/thanatos thing. Just got kinda graphic near the end there.
I guess I see it more as satire on the obsession with the "big reveal" rather than any kind of focus on the story as a whole. And of course the Onion doesn't tend to back off when they could take one more step.
