Oh, man. I never knew peanut butter could go stale. Isn't that why they pack it full of sugar and preservatives?

Okay, maybe I should have caught on when I noticed the pools of oil settling in the knife carved crevasses, but... Christmas, that's ugly. It tastes like disappointment.

Peanut butter can separate, and it can be re-stirred. Taste it to make sure the fat hasn't actually gone rancid, though.

I think it's definitely gone off, somehow. It tastes a bit dusty, if that makes sense.

I keep all my nut oils like Peanut and Walnut in the fridge tightly sealed to avoid this. We buy the natural stuff, so it has to be refridgerated anyway. The oils naturally settle out of it between uses; the separation itself doesn't mean it's stale.


Also, more people have come down with Salmonella poisoning from Peter Pan peanut butter, so if that's what you have you should throw it out.

I think it's Kraft, so hopefully it's just that it's gone beyond.

I'm pretty sure it is stale; the flavour is off, and we've had this bottle for at least a few years (I think we moved it here from our old place).

I wonder if I can compost peanut butter.

Actually, my ex used to keep her natural PB in the fridge upside down; that seemed to help slow the separation.
