Spider-Man: Three thoughts

1) Well, I guess if I enjoyed one movie that was actually two films in one, I can't see why I wouldn't enjoy this one.

2) Thank God they keep Ratner off of it.

3) Spider-Man 4: Enter the Black Cat, starring zoebell as Felicia Hardy. Come on, you want it.

3a) Man, were Gwen & The Captain (no relation to The Captain and Tenille) wasted. Does anyone still give a shit about Gwen Stacy, anyway?

I thought it was a waste of time to have Gwen Stacy and Captain Stacy as well. I was impressed, however, in how they managed to pull off this movie. It wasn't bad, ya know?

Considering how much of a muddled mess it COULD have been (i.e. Batman & Robin, X-Men 3), Raimi practically performed a miracle.

While my emotional response to SM3 is "hey, it was an okay matinee movie," the more I think about the (realtive) deftness of taking three villains and braiding their stories together to reinforces aspects of the others (and Spider-Man's), I'm quite impressed.

I actually think the movie needs to be maybe 10 minutes longer, to get full closure on the various character threads -- a couple seemed dropped or abridged, probably due to editing.

I suppose having missed the stories the first time around, she just lacks resonance for me. She's always been something that happened before my time.

3a Response- The problem is, Gwen Stacy's biggest moment in the comics was done in the first movie, with MJ standing in for Gwen and living. And with MJ having been Peter's first and only love, there's not much room for Gwen. I guess it's a nod to the fans that, if they're going to bring in a romantic rival, why not bring in one that was in the comics rather than creating a whole new character.

Captain Stacy was before my time (well, Gwen was too, but the captain didn't have such a powerful moment that showed up in Marvels). I knew there was such a character, and I knew he died in the comics, but that's about all I could tell you. So, for a younger fan, it looked like a nice nod to the comics. And, with everything going on, I don't think there was room to develope the Stacys beyond what we saw.

BTW, this is the most positive review of Spider-Man 3 I've read yet. I'm going to see it this afternoon, so thanks for giving me a breath of hope. :)

I always liked Gwen more than MJ, but probably because that was when I was ardently reading Spiderman. MJ seemed too flighty.

Considering how long ago that was, you're probably right. Most of the people going to the film won't know who the hell she is. Unless they read Spiderman: Blue.

I'll probably see it next week sometime. The movie. I can see Spiderman: Blue on my shelf.

Felicia's the anti-Gwen. I love Spidey and hate Peter, to Gwen's opposite reaction.

Bruce Campbell's cameo was a scream! The man takes a minor role and practically stole the entire scene! Much better than 'Annoying doorman' stuff from Spidey 2.

And I immensely enjoyed the rest of the movie as well.

I got the impression there was more Gwen Stacey and and Captain Stacey stuff but probably was cut for time. They served their purpose in the movie well enough.

Gwen was really, I believe, added in to give MJ someone to become jealous over - a reversal to Spidey 2 (whereas in Spidey 2 it was J J's son, the Astronaut for Parker to be jealous over almost marrying MJ)

And I also agree that in the hands of a lesser director, having 3 villains in the same movie could have been an utter disaster. But I think each was handled pretty well. Not too overwhelming and with a twist or two on things I didn't see coming (but will refrain from stating without spoiler warnings for those who have yet to see the movie)

Oh, yeah, normally I'm no huge fan of Campbell, but this was good. Less obnoxious than his normal performance in these films. And good to see Ted, too.
