Oh, man. You know, maybe I’m a bit crazy (hee hee!) but I really enjoyed Love & Monsters. I assumed most God Fearing folk would agree. But, imagine my surprise when upon looking at the DWIN blog I find out that not only do some people NOT like it, but they dislike it rather vocally.

Ah, well. I found it well done and sweet, so that’s all that really matters, I guess.

Some people would dislike Heaven.

I completely agree, and I liked the very similar Torchwood episode "Random Shoes" even more.

Ed only saw the last half, and asked me if he missed something, or was that the worst Doctor Who episode ever. I said he missed something.

He would love the fandom metaphors, but all he got was cement block Myrtle.

I'd say homage. Most of the series' writers are DW fanboys, hang out at Tavern etc.

Maybe not a band (Birds of Prey?) but certainly grew social friendships from a shared fanbase. And the members of Linda are far too nice and sweet to be just objects of mocking.

Shirley Henderson in a Dr Who episode? Heck, that spells "sure fire hit" to me...

I really liked Love and Monsters, but I really didn't like Fear Her, which from what I hear a lot of people also didn't like.

I haven't gone to look yet, but I always find it funny when people who can accept that the hero of a kid's show (let's face it) flies through time and space in a phone booth with his chosen-for-something-the-GIRLS[ick]-can relate to "companion" fighting foam rubber monsters in stories that are traditionally mostly talking heads complain that something on the program was "too silly".

This would be like someone complaining about the North American equivalent, over here - best as I can judge, that would be the Sid & Marty Krofft production of DOCTOR ZHIVAGO with Charles Nelson Reilly in full HooDoo drag as Komarovsky.

Fans are fucking stupid, man.

Oh - and for the record,

LOVE AND MONSTERS was a great episode.

They had me at "DONT BRING ME DOWN".

If they hadn't ended with cement block Linda, I'd have loved it whole-heartedly. As it was, 80% heartedly.

Moaning Myrtle? What's that?

Hamish Macbeth, Trainspotting, Topsy Turvy, Once Upn A Time In The Midlands, Yes.

She was in one of the Harry Potter films? Well, I guess I can't hold it against her... 8)

Oddly enough, I appreciated the cement-block Linda more on subsequent viewings. Contrast the emotional state of Elton and Linda at the end of the episode with the final emotional state we see of Jackie. The plot is pretty flippant, but there's some decent emotional work going on underneath the surface there -- I got a lot more out of this episode the second time I watched it.

(For my money, one of the big sadnesses about Billie Piper leaving the show is that we're very unlikely to see any more of Camille Coduri: I thought her Jackie was starting to turn into a rather interesting character.)
