Personal faults aside, he was the funkiest of the funky. I just picked up the two-CD anthology of the J.B.s, and it holds up amazingly well today. ("The Grunt" is one of the most heavily sampled of all R&B tunes; Public Enemy used it as the basis for at LEAST two of their songs. Did JB get paid, I wonder?)
