Oh, yeah, it's a jerky move on their part. But I see bread with toppings. It's just preparation. Is a grilled cheese a sandwich, even though it's grilled? Or a Quiznos sub, that's been broiled? I think so.
The sandwich chain is trying to restrict competition from anyone that sells hand-held bread-like products with fillings by defining all hand-held bread-like products with fillings as "sandwiches". So that's falafel, shawarma, shish taouk, souvlaki, or gyros in a pita, spring rolls, cold rolls, roti, pizza pockets, probably pizza if you take this far enough, hard and soft tacos, AND burritos. Very likely more that I can't call to mind at the moment. Hand-held crepes? Basically they don't want any lunch competition, period. Tough luck to them.
What about a calzone - is it a sandwich? (I mean the Italian calzone, not the South American one - there, calzones means girls' underpants). If a calzone is, then what about a meat pie? Fruit pie? Samosas? Cornish pasties? Sweet-and-sour chicken balls? Where do you draw the line?
