Leave it to [livejournal.com profile] gamera_spinning to remind me, but there's a trailer for Spider Man 3 trailer up on the intarwebs.

Okay, so Sandman is the burglar/carjacker, which is a bigger step away than organic webshooters, if you ask me. The black costume apparently just shows up, and gives him puissance.

I assume Venom is saved for the next film, or possibly the finale of this one, and we get a little of Green Goblin II.

The hysteria over this photo is, I think, somewhat exaggerated. It looks more like a sideways shot than they've reconfigured the glider like a snowboard. The glider's lack of symmetry is what makes me think that, anyway.

The mask at least shows his forehead this time.

Venom!!

I WANT VENOM!

That is all.

Looks okay on the whole, but I'm not down with Sandman being the guy who killed Uncle Ben. Since that would mean that Ben _didn't_ get killed by the guy who he let pass, thus teaching his important lesson 'With great power, yadda yadda yadda'. Unless they're retconning that it's the same guy, but didn't he fall out a window and die in Spidey 1? Or maybe I'm misremembering that part entirely.

At any rate, the way they say "this is the guy who really killed your Uncle" suggests that the guy Pete went after, dead or not, wasn't him.

Hmm. Maybe the Sandman was the guy who bankrolled the petty crook, or something?

Though, did we actually see him shoot Uncle Ben?

If that was well handled (the sudden realization that, hey, it didn't matter what I did that night) then it could support some nice characterization of the vengeance-seeking type, seen in that trailer.

If it's not Spider-Man's fault, does that mean Peter no longer has any great responsibility go along with his great power?

It doesn't matter if Pete thinks he's finally "free". If some super-powered freak is tearing up downtown Manhattan, he's GOING to put on the costume and stop him.

If he passes a mugger, he's going to stop him.

THAT'S his promise to Uncle Ben.

And you can wring gallon upon gallon of Parkerian angst out of the fact that he even CONSIDERED the possibility that he could walk away from it.

Agreed a million percent. I'll reserve judgment till I see the film, but at first glance it feels cheap.

If "Venom" is strictly the black costume, I'm good with that.

As I understand it, Raimi has stated flat-out that this is a trilogy, and this is the finale.

If X-Men 3 reminded me of anything, it's that movies are going to have their own continuity, and you can either ride with it or it'll potentially ruin the whole movie for you.

That said, hearing about Marko killing Ben last night was a bit of a stunner, but I'm willing to give it a shot. Seeing Harry in the flight suit was a surprise, though.

X Men 3 mostly reminded me that if you change directors a good series can go to shit just like that.

Superman Returns then reminded me that even if a director was good at doing a different series, he can still fuck up the one he's on now.

Luckily we've still got Raimi working on this one.

I knew I'd catch hell for that, but I stand by my original take: (http://stop-no-dont.livejournal.com/165683.html#cutid1) X3 was the type of all-out brawl the series needed, and for better or worse, getting Cyclops outta there opened the whole flick up.

See I agree that the series needed an all out brawl. I just don't think it needed a retard fight in place of a real brawl.

Sorry, but my hatred of X3 know no limit. I really, really hated that movie.

Superman Returns, otoh, I actually enjoyed while watching it. I just couldn't think to hard about it or the fact that Superman and Lois were both transformed into pathetic lying cowards would stick out rather to strongly. But man, the moment when he fell from the sky? That got me in a powerful way, even if the other stuff irked me.

See, I thought it could have been a lot worse than it ended up being. The explanation for Phoenix ended up being used in the Ultimate line, and the Cure storyline, while tapering off toward the end, played out as well as one can expect without Joss writing and Ord there to be a funny badass. More in the post I linked to above.

One question: is it me, or is it seemingly impossible for people to enjoy both X3 & Superman Returns?

It's easily possible. All it would take is amazingly bad taste.

::ahem::

I really loved X3, and thought the two story lines together worked fine. It had many fine moments, and me & my friends cheered many times, from Beast saying "Oh my Stars & Garters" to Wolverine asking Colossus "Hey kid, how's your throwing arm" to Jean ripping the flesh right off of Wolvie. It was far far from perfect, but was a lot of fun and had quite a few cool comic book-inspired moments.

Now Superman Returns I haven't seen.
