Oh, man. Back to the WotC SWSTCMG preview page, part 2, and I just had a geekgasm.

Nevertheless, Luke's reputation as a skilled pilot might have been overstated somewhat, at least in the early years. By the time the second Death Star was destroyed, Luke had lost no fewer than four X-wings:
# The first was lost the day after the Battle of Yavin when Luke encountered a stray TIE fighter that had survived the battle.
# Not long thereafter, Luke crashed an X-wing on Mimban after encountering a severe electrical storm.
# Another survived a crash landing on Dagobah only to be abandoned on Bespin after the Empire took over Cloud City.
# Almost immediately after Luke's recovery from his duel with Darth Vader, he lost yet another X-wing when he encountered a Rebel corvette that had been taken over by Special Probe Droid 13-K.

I mean, I know that's some huge fanservice, but they mention Splinter of the Mind's Eye AND a really cool issue of the Marvel series.

I remember that Marvel series with fondness. Too bad it was all ret-conned.

Continuity is something I leave for other guys to worry about. As long as I have my memories, Plif will live forever.

I thought Splinter was not considered Canon since it portrayed Luke and Leia as potential Love interests.

Kinda spoils that whistful "somehow, Ive always known" deal.

I think for web content they're allowed to acknowledge the non-canonical stuff, especially if it gives the fanboy audience something to enjoy.

I think it was NOT doing her that caused his downfall. The Solo kids are not nearly as powerful as full blooded Skywalkers would have been.

I'm reminded by the quote from US astronaut Alan B. Shepard; "Any landing you walk away from is a good one." So Luke isn't that bad a p pilot.

Now, *you* reminded me of "Splinter of the Mind's Eye", and how much I enjoyed this (alas) non canon work. Thanks!

The one thing I remember most vividly from SotME was that Luke was a meter away from impalement in one direction, and decapitation in another. That always creeped me out.
