Greeting, Loyal Bitterites! Today is a contest unlike any other (or perhaps too similar to any other. I can really never tell). Two icons of the Rock Songs About Astronauts that May Be a Thinly Disguised Metaphor for Drug Use or Just Intense Relationships wars, Sir Elton John and David "Insert nickname here" Bowie.

War may be too strong a word. Skirmish? Intense staredowns?

Bowie released Space Oddity in 1969 to coincide with the moon landsings, and Elton John's Rocket Man was released in three years later to coincide with the end of the moon landings. I think it was the Masons sending us signals.

So, yes. These two icons of pre-disco pop are stellar examples of whatever genre they can fit into. But there isn't room for two on the launch Gantry of Hoo'd Win!

So! Make your choice! Pick your side! Let one reign triumphant, and the other weep in their castle on pillows filled with money!

Man, that is a lot closer than I'd like.

One of my lesser favourite Bowie songs by a nose, in front of one of my top two or three favourite EJ songs ... which if nothing else shows how much more highly I regard Bowie.

Bowie is hopelessly overrated, and after you hear "Oddity" a few times, it has nothing more to offer. It's sexy and stylish and a bit ominous, sure, but ultimately it's little more than a novelty song.

Plus "Rocketman" is more fun to sing.
