Hoo'd Win?! Part Enough Episodes for a hundred channels

Yes, loyal Bitterites! The time has come to decide the champion in this storied TV rivalry. Hoo'd Win in an epic battle between Law & Order and CSI!

Law and Order is the hoary veteran, with 16 years under its belt (and that's just for one show! Add seven more for SVU, five for Criminal Intent, and a bit for Trial by Jury, and it's been on the air long enough to drink! In the states! All of them!), but Bruckheimer helmed CSI has been the tenacious newcomer for six years (which in TV land makes it an old pro, but there's nothing sadder than two old guys swinging at each other).

So now, Bitterites! Pick! Will it be the always New York a riffic, Chung Chung-tastic L&O? Or will the Who Helmed rainbow of CSI win the day?

For me, CSI just never grabbed me like L&O has. I'm a bigger fan of SVU than the regular L&O (and CI or the other one never did it for me.) Mainly, I like SVU for Meloni and Ice-T, and I have to admit I like seeing all the OZ alumni on both shows.

Personally, I completely prefer Law and Order (not L&O: CI, which is terrible, or that other newer one; I like SVU and the origianl) but I'm entertained by how relentlessly stupid CSI is.

Oh yeah, maybe the science is (mostly) correct, but Grissom's (sp?) little witty remarks, his not-so-casual quotations of Shakespeare/Socrates/ whatever are just too contrived for me to turn away. If I knew Grissom in real life, I would do everything in my power to avoid being in the same room with him, especially alone. What a bore! But on tv, he's hilariously melodramatic. It's a bit like watching Shatner in ST.

And all of the acting is so bad, and the writing is so 'Crime drama for dummies!' and the montages of like, someone sharpening a pencil are so falsely intense - it's the perfect model of how to write something with zero substance but maximum impact.

I've only watched one episode each, but L & O did strike me as less stupid than CSI. They may get the science right on CSI, but they don't seem to know anything else about police procedure. Like in the CSI episode I watched (which I believe was the very first one), the crime scene tech who apparently is treated as the lead investigator on the show (WTF?) was discussing the evidence with the suspect on the scene in such a way as to allow the suspect to revise his story to fit the evidence, all before an actual detective had shown up. It's not like that couldn't happen in real life, but it would mean you had a grotesquely incompetent crime scene tech on your hands.

I can't watch procedurals in general because I'm such a gigantic true crime geek though; I know that normal people enjoy them for other reasons.

L&O for sure! Even if that's only because it at least makes an attempt to be believeable. CSI is just way too pretty, I can't handle it.

L&O is an institution now. It can go on forever, like Today, and do just fine. CSI isn't there yet. Institutions win, so L&O wins.

I was never able to sit through an ep of L&O, and though I know I'm going to bring down the wrath of various folks by saying so, the reason is, I was bored. If it doesn't grab me in the first few minutes, I'm gone. *shrug*

I liked CSI because it was more intense, more interesting. I love a plot twist, which CSI (Vegas, darling -- I'll have no truck with any other version) does very well, IMO.

But it's all moot: I can't watch anything like that anymore, those shows push too many (bad) buttons. Really, if it came right down to it, I'd rather Hill Street Blues than either of the above, but whaddya gonna do?

But if you want a really different cop story, try Life on Mars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life_on_Mars_%28TV_series%29). It's fucking phenomenal.
