What I presume is one of the Usual Suspects on [livejournal.com profile] canpolitik posted a screed on organ donation. Now, aside from the standard stupidities in the comments section, this line in the original post amused me greatly:

I'd be as pissed off as the next person if I were to find out that I've been automatically signed up for organ donation without my consent.

The amusing point? By the time organ donation happens, you're dead, so I sincerely doubt what happens to your mortal remains is any great concern by that point.

Don't some religions require the body to remain intact for burial purposes? (Eh, what I know about religion, etc.)

Me, I'm of the opinion that if I ain't gonna be using it, someone else oughta get some benefit. Not that I expect much of me will be worth sharing by the time I'm done using it, mind...

In which case, there is an opt-out clause. The default is switching, but it's still possible to say you don't want to be parcelled out after death.

Since there are very few situations where organ donation is an option - most are head traumas that don't affect the rest of the body - it will probably never matter to him personally anyway.

Yes, you will need all the organs you can get in Hell when God sends you there for not donating them. :D

While I'm an organ donor (or intend to be!) myself, and wholly support the program, I can understand being pissed off that you'd been automatically signed up for /anything/ (let alone having your body cut up and parcelled out) against your will.

I assume he means that if he were to find out pre-(rather than post)humously, like via some medical paperwork or the like.

And some people believe that the state of their body after death may affect their condition then, so... *shrug* Not mine to say whether it's a big concern for them or not.

You're missing the point. How'd you like to rise up from the grave when the zombie apocalypse and find out that your spleen is somewhere in the vicinity of Tucson? All the other zombies would laugh at you.
