Racism in video games

For the benefit of Scooter, the human supercomputer, I link to gamepolitics bit on the piece on racism in gaming reported in The Star today.

I find his results questionable, personally. But, this is for general consumption.

Yeah, those games were obviously NOT selected at random. Picking "Shadow Warrior", which is hilarious but also screamingly racist (just listen to that guy's accent) kind of shuts down the point of this study. A better way to do it would be to play, say, the top five best-selling games of all time on each current system and see what comes up.

By the way, if you can find it, there's an absolutely HILARIOUS letter the Spanish envoy to Japan wrote to Capcom about the depiction of the Spanish in "Resident Evil 4." It was leaked and Capcom did a pretty thorough job of scrubbing it, but as bureaucratic hissy-fits go, it's hysterical. The guy seems especially upset over the foul mouths the inbred Spanish rednecks have.

Yeah, I had forgotten Shadow Warrior until I read the interview. He definitely picked material to support his thesis.

Well, at least he wasn't looking for those goddamn Nazi mods and then proclaiming video games are tools of racist propaganda.
