None of the above. I don't have to do this, but I choose to go self-serve, pay at the pump, more often than not, because it's easier (if not necessarily quicker). So, my card is authorized in advance for a fill-up maximum amount (these days, that's usually $100, though thank Toyota, our fill-ups never get to even half that). Then I fill up, then the actual final amount is debited. So it's yes and no. And you know exactly where I live. :)
Well, that would just be "don't have to", since it's an option you take. This is just to decide if your local gas stations require payment before pumping.
There's a Sunoco and a Shell near where I work that have started to insist on this. Otherwise, they all let me pay after pumping unless it's like 2 in the morning...
I hate the fact that there is pay before you pump, and I don't even own a car myself. I have only ever seen it in the US. (obviously some of you already know I'm Canadian).
I understand why they do it. I myself have friend who's best friend drives off without paying with some frequency. (Or at least claims to). Not only a jerk but a criminal. Bleh. Even so, I do not like it. I feel it conveys the message that the onus is on the gas stations to catch people and make them pay, while the onus should be on the people purchasing the gas. :P Have some honour people.
