From some wacky newspaper piece on DC and Marvel:

DC, back then: It's your kid brother, wacked out on Pop-Tarts, still in his underpants at 10 a.m., insisting on "Super Friends" over "Josie and the Pussycats in Outer Space." Thinks he's Batman at night, thinks he's Aquaman in the tub. It's make-believe, make-believe, make-believe. A hot dog is not a death ray, now sit down and eat. And who used all of the red and orange crayons? And why is Robin always in here naked with my Barbies?

Marvel, back then: It's your big sister's boyfriend, already 18 and "kind of different, but nice," your mother observes, although he rides a motorcycle with no helmet. He draws an Incredible Hulk for you on a sheet of paper, and that's it, you're hooked, he's a god. From him you learn about Ghost Rider and Conan the Barbarian and Silver Surfer. He listens to Rush.

Oh, yeah. My mind is not for rent to ANY God or Government.

That's a big part of why I always preferred marvel over DC...

See, that's an analogy I don't buy. I've always enjoyed both (though, to be honest, I've always been able to look beyond the company and at the individual titles - over the years, I've loved me some serious shit outta both) and even as a kid, I could look beyond the whole DC vs Marvel issue.

Green Lantern, in outer space. Omega Men. Sun Devils. Atari Force (yes, Atari Force.) Adam Strange. Legion of Super Heroes - DC always ruled the scifi/outerspace comics.

X-men. The Fantastic Four. The Avengers. Marvel has always dominated with the relationship-of-a-group-of-heroes-fighting-to-save-the-world drama comics.

Thor (when Walt Simonson was kicking ass on it). Wonder Woman (since the COIE reboot). Even split on Great Mythological Comics.

...

Maybe I'll turn this into a post, but right now I haven't eaten in over 20 hours, except for coffee in the morning, an iced coffee in the afternoon, and a frozen coffee in the late afternoon. I think I need to remedy that.

But the point is, I guess.... I love both companies. DC will always be my "fave" of the two, b/c, and simply b/c, it was my first.

Atari Force (yes, Atari Force.)

Yes! Atari Force!

There was a strange period when some of the best comics out there were toy and media tie-ins. Micronauts, Atari Force -- even G.I. Joe of that era had some strong writing and critical recognition.

"Always" was a bit excessive, I grant. There have been numerous sucky titles and numerous good titles from each, and books should be taken on their own merits. What I meant is that, by and large, back when I was actually collecting comics, far more of the titles I liked were Marvel than DC (all the main DCverse stuff I ever really bothered to collect had to do with the Bat and/or the Cat), though the Vertigo imprint tends to be excellent.

I collected the Larsenverse branch of Image comics for quite a while too, so take my opinions with a grain of salt. ;)

I used to read Savage Dragon; not sure what else falls under the "Larsenverse"; Savage Dragon was entertaining quite often, at least back when I read it. Erik Larsen, as a person, is a bit of a twat. As a creator, he's good, if not a bit too impressed by himself.

Let's see... other books about his characters included Vanguard (not that impressive a book. I never collected it), Freak Force (I would have liked that book a lot better if they'd gotten a decent artist) and the SuperPatriot limited series... I got the first two of those, and they were excellent internally as well as beautifully drawn. Even though the character originally began as a parody of Cap. Dart was a larsen book too. It had pretty art and not much else going for it. Star was another.

Hmmm, Vanguard and Freak Force are triggering little, "I think I've heard something about them before" bells. SuperPatriot, I vaguely know the character (which means I prolly own some issues, or at least did back in the day).. the rest, nothing.

I do think that The Savage Dragon had the best supporting cast out of the entire Image line.

I'll confess to enjoying the WildCATS 'universe' most of all.

Most 'specially when they broke it wide open with the Return to Khera (or whatever the planet was called), when you realize how long the war's been over.

Quite enjoyed that part.

Never read it that far, I guess.. or maybe that's part of the stuff I've forgotten over the years.

But, yeah, that sounds pretty wild.

Yeah, and that was a time period I was specifically reading both, and I still don't agree with it 100%. It's a difference of perspective; is said person is a member of the Marvel-is-better-than-DC school?

Yanno, Aquaman became cool when he ditched that orange and green suit and they started explaining that Atlantis had ties to the sorcerous Atlantis of history and to Arion and all that...

But I always wanted to be Namor, more than Arthur.

(And I was Namor in the swimming pool, fuck the bathtub!)

Namor's cooler than aquaman. I don't remember any occasions when Aquaman teamed up with Dr. Doom, after all.

The Maxx used to be in only two trades, but they recently rereleased all five. It's good, if you enjoy magic and superpowers being used as a metaphor (kinda) for psychoanalysis. Haha.

And the show... the show was awesome. *sigh*

It's pretty... wacky.

Well, I checked, and it doesn't seem to be out on DVD. Which is stupid and lame.

Seriously, though, I have no idea what this person is talking about. When I becoming aware of the difference, it was DC, not Marvel that came off as being the cool, maturer one. I suspect this comes from exposure to the original Batman cartoon (and lack of exposure to Superfriends, the 60s Batman, etc) and vague awareness of comics like Dark Knight Returns. Marvel, by comparison, had the X-Men and Spiderman cartoons, which were more focused on things like monsters and adventuring than the more subtle and low-key plots of the Batman cartoon.

Exactly. Nowadays, most of the people I know from around who read comics are more likely to read Joe Sacco than Justice League.
