A geek moment
Feb. 11th, 2006 11:43 pmWhen I was a kid, one of my favourite books in the library was a compendium of old Wonder Woman stories. In that book, Wonder Woman had her gang of sorority sidekicks (including Etta Candy, the original superhero fat sidekick).
Anyway, every few issues one of her buddies would be wounded gravely in battle, and WW would whisk them off to Paradise Island for five minutes of Purple Healing Ray therapy.
Well, deus ex machina it may be, it was cool.
So, recently, in Infinite Crisis #3, Paradise Island is under attack by a swarm of nano empowered fighting machines (God, I hate when that happens). So, the Amazons are working to ward them off. Their last ditch attempt? They reverse the polarity on the Purple Healing Ray to be a Purple Death Ray.
Folks, you know me. I don't squee. I don't titter. I don't giggle. But that moment, as much as anything else in the IC series, owned me. Held me down and made me say uncle. More than the return of Barry Allen, more than the devastation of the Freedom Fighters, more than the return of Superman II, more than any of those things, the Purple Death Ray was a Fuck Yeah moment.

Date: 2006-02-12 04:44 am (UTC)I wasn't familiar with the Purple Healing ray, so it didn't give me chills or anything like that.
Barry Allen was one of my fave chars growing up, and I got the goosebumps when Barry showed up.
The Superman II return was more of an, "oh, wow, I wasn't expecting to ever see them again" sorta thing. The Freedom Fighters thing wasn't quite as big as the rest, but having read them in days gone by, it was kinda like, "Oh, wow, that's not cool."

Date: 2006-02-12 05:29 am (UTC)Barry Allen's appearance would have beenbetter for me if two things hadn't happened before it:
- someone hadn't had their head punched off their shoulders four pages before it
and
- it hadn't already happened 3 months before it in the regular FLASH series.
I just wish they'd let Barry be dead or alive - every time he shows up for whatever reason since CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS #6 I die a little inside...
I really *really* wish I could say I was enjoying INFINITE CRISIS, but I'm not.

Date: 2006-02-13 02:19 am (UTC)The Nail was good, but the sequel was fairly ass-tastic. Golden Age was a really good story, but too harsh on the characters. KC & CO were both really good stories (although I think John Stewart got the shaft in CO).
I've never read Rock of Ages or Quiver; I'll check them out. Thanks!

Date: 2006-02-13 02:27 am (UTC)Yeah, Another Nail was the suckfest of the past... decade or so.
I liked the harshness of The Golden Age, but then I'm a fan of harsh stories.
Yeah, John did flub up pretty good in CO, but it was a pretty cool, "Oh, shit," kinda moment.
Quiver is excellent, and since it's a start of a new series and bringing back a dead character, it's a great read even if someone has no f'ing clue about Ollie. Rock of Ages is just a great quirky story. I also reccy the Tower of Babel storyline from JLA - it's not as good as RoA, but it's got some serious "daaaaaamn" moments.
Oops my bad...
Date: 2006-02-12 05:34 am (UTC)I aught to have said CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS #8.
(You realise, that with this week's TEEN TITANS retelling the story from INFINITE CRISIS #4, that this will be the third seperate comic in 4 weeks that's had a Geoff Johns story where a female character has her head punched off of her shoulders by a super-powered male one... blood spurting... the works...)

Date: 2006-02-12 06:06 am (UTC)The second was Mongul's sister in GREEN LANTERN #8, and it was completely gratuitous.
(not that Superboy-Prime punching Huntra's head off was any less gratuitous, but that at least established the punk as an out-of-control monster...)
