It is a quiet day...
Jan. 11th, 2006 12:39 pmSo, I ask you to...
Please ask me a question, something you think you should know about me but don't. If I answer your question, I get to ask you a question in return.

Date: 2006-01-16 04:33 pm (UTC)Actually in my life would probably go to my high school English teachers Mrs. Gazely & Mr. Stuart, because who can't recognize a high school teacher? They could have been more disciplinarian and helped curb my slacking tendancies, but they encouraged and taught. And Mr. Kenney, for being the biggest asshole who ever lived and showing me you couldn't really trust adults.
Outside of my personal acquaintances, I'd go with Mssrs Lucas, Roddenbery & Gygas (the creators of Star Wars, Star Trek & D&D, respectively). If not for them, who knows, I could have gotten laid in high school. But I doubt it.
My question: What's it like working for the family business? Do you ever get any weird feelings like you've never left 'the nest'?

Date: 2006-01-16 04:50 pm (UTC)I was all over the Lucas & Roddenbery reference, but I did need a reminder on Gygas. I recognised the name when you said D&D but not before...
As for your Question to me.... Damn fine question, a question that I consider at least once a week.
I will answer it I promise you this, but it will have to be tonight. I want to give a thought-filled answer (one that cannot be done at here...

Date: 2006-01-17 05:45 am (UTC)Working for the Family Business, has many good points, but yes, many down points. The best way to describe it is to give a list of advantages and disadvantages
Advantages:
a) Great Pay.... (not necessarily top of the list, but a good perk)
b) Big Fish, Little Pond
c) Perks, (things paid for my the company, that may or may not be covered for regular employees)
d) You really get to know your family (their good and bad sides)
e) You can be frank about problems and how you feel about them with your family members. With regular bosses you have a tendency to hold back (you know because you can be fired!) Sure you can be fired from a family business, but it much harder.... I learned along time ago, that "Who you know will get your foot in the door, but it is what you know that keeps you there" Just because I am family, I keep my job because I do a good job
f) Family gives you chances to truly show your shine. Chances that a regular job might not give you.
Disadvantages:
a) You have to really like your family and be able to work with them 24/7. (which I do, and can)
b) The catch is to be able to turn if off at the end of the night. (which rarely happens) Works is discussed during dinners, while watching movies. It has to because this is our livelihood, if the company goes down, we are all looking for work.
c) Employees think that just because I am related, that I know all that happens and what my parents are thinking.
d) Because I am more their the employees age, they feel more comfortable in confiding and complaining to me. (which I guess is a good thing, but I just don't care sometimes!! Deal with it yourself!!!) :)
As for not leaving the nest, this is why I finely got my ass in gear to buy this house. One step at a time anyway. It will lesson the after hours talks about work. I like my job, I am doing what I went to school for. Do I think I could be doing this somewhere else. Yes, for sure, but I am close to my family, and proud of what they started, and I can help grow. I know that I have stayed in the nest a long time, but I don't see it as a problem because as much as I have been living at home, I also have been going out and am out more night. I call Tottenham where I sleep, I like in the Greater GTA. I have experienced so much because of this family business, and I don't think I would change anything I have ever done.
There was a time during High School that I told only one friend that I wanted to work for Famous Players. That was my dream job. Now that they are being bought up, I'd say I did ok in my choice!
Does answer it? I know it's really long, but it is something that I think about all the time. It had many ups and downs, advantages and disadvantages, but the advantages out weigh the disadvantages big time. It's not for everyone. Not at all....
Thanks for the question, this fun. :)
