Thirty years old? Man. That makes me feel old. Admittedly, publication began before I could read, but still.

I wonder if he's the only Trudeau era superhero? Ah, well. It was a cool concept, at the very least. I can't recall too much, but thinking back I think it was set in the early 21st Century (ie right now) and was as much a proto-technothriller as a straight superhero book.

Of course, I could be on crack, but that's what it seemed like. All the resurrections seem somewhat half hearted.

Yeah, I first came across the Captain in the early 80's... totally loved it.

And yeah, I believe it was a near-future/proto-technothriller setting.

It was distributed down here, printed in Canada. I honestly don't recall where I got it, I would wager either a convention, or more likely, my local comic book shop.

I think I still have the copy or two I came across; sometime when I have a little more free time on my hands, I'll see if I can dig it out. It's in the 'C' box, so shouldn't be buried too deep in the library.

I used to run around yelling that randomly in grade 8, after "Lunch!" got old. "Scarf" was still fresh, I think, but that was a seasonal thing.

Uh huh. I found him in the school library's edition of "The Encyclopedia of Superheroes."

CC was good when George Freeman was the penciller. Creator Richard Comely, not so much.

I think it's a newspaper strip these days. My friend Mark Shainblum is the writer. A very good author... it's just a bit ironic how a character created and initially promoting the Born Again Christian faith is now in my fellow Jew's perspective. :)

What about Northguard or The Northern Light? (Okay YES I have Captain Canuck comics. Yes I have old issues of ORB.) I'm a flag geek. Deal with it.

Considering how Northguard was created by the writer I mentioned before (Mark Shainblum) here in Montreal with artist Gabriel Morrissette (another friend) - AND is on the First Day envelope cover for the superhero stamps a few years ago, it's definitely Canadian.

I realized you were joking. I just have the "skill" of being the straight man to any bit... I wasn't upset.

Actually now that I think about it, I'm positive there are some flashback panels in Alpha Flight with Guardian (male), talking with Trudeau. Does that technically make him a Trudeau era hero?

(I could dig my copies out and scan them if you REALLY want to know) LOL.

Ah, the good ones. After that, it went downhill really fast, and had a couple interesting points here and there. (Assuming we're talking about the Byrne run, not the recent stuff... which I've not touched, don't know the first thing about.)

Its due...

I'm surprised they haven't released the lot as a Marvel Visionaries: John Byrne's Alpha Flight...

Then again, an Essential Alpha Flight would cover all of the X-Men appearances, all of teh guest appearances (including a cool one in Machine Man as drawn by Steve Ditko) and the better part of Byrne's 20 some issue run on the book...

Just sayin...

Its Issue 18 or 19 and is INCREDIBLY hard to find because Ditko fans want it and Byrne-era Alpha Flight fans aren't giving it up...

There was a big deal made in the Canadian press at the time for X-Men 121 and 122, because Pierre Trudeau was appearing in a Marvel comic (and looking very post-Margaret ready to hump anything, I might add - he had his ascot on, if I recall properly).

Oddly, the Canadian press was unaware of ALPHA FLIGHT *unless* a team-mate announced their sexual preference when Trudeau *wasn't* in the book...

Actually, that scene was even older...

It took place in X-Men 122...

And yes, Pierre is regretting having to shut down the Alpha program...

[cue dramatic sting]

...FROM THE SECURITY OF HIS HIGH TECH BUNKER HALF A KILOMETER BENEATH THE WEST BLOCK OF THE PARLIAMENT BUILDINGS IN OTTAWA!!!!

[sting!! stiiiiiiiiiiing!!!]

God I wish my hometown was half as cool as the Marvel Comics version of it.

(then again, that's why I read the fricking things, isn't it...?)

Hahaha. Yeah I remember reading that oh so long ago when it came out. ^_^

Yeah well don't wish for too much Marvelism in your geography, after all one of the Alpha Flight stories starts with "Toronto Ontario, on the banks of the mighty St Lawrence River." (which I'm pretty sure was Montreal last time I checked.) Although the story DOES indeed take place here in Toronto, at Ontario Place.

...with TENTICLES in the WATER...

See? Marvel Earth is cooler.

I can remember when Cronenberg's THE FLY came out the summer before I started university here and when I saw it again at a screening at school I'd already had time to do some scouting of teh downtown core (meaning young street) and when Brundle is getting his horn on after he's gone through the pods for teh first time he walks from Dundas, North to Gerrard or so (circa 1985). You can clearly see the CHEAPIE'S sign as he passes it.

All I could think at the time was "This must be how people in Los Angeles and New York City feel EVERY DAY when they see a movie or watch TV or read a comic..."
