Hey! You! I gots another question:

Do you have dollar stores where you're at?

A dollar store, as the title suggests, sells only very cheap merchandise. Everything from pens n' papers to cutlery and paper plates and, well, cheap stuff. Quality follows price, as my eternally shrinking bootlaces could attest.

Generally, they sell everything for a dollar, although one place had HP Curry sauce for $4.

So, are they a universal phenomenon? Are they "Pound stores" in England? [livejournal.com profile] thorkell do they have them in Iceland?

I gots to know.

They're practically a staple of life in many corners of the U.S. Anything you need for $1 (or at least "very cheaply") can be found there.

We've got thousands of 'em in California, of varying size and quality. I check 'em out all the time 'cause ya just find the damnedest things there, really. Old bootleg toys of long-canceled cartoons, bags of chips featuring tie-in promotions for movies that were in theater three years ago, foods and drinks you've never fucking heard of, etc.

Fun stuff.

They've even infiltrated the malls (not just the strip malls, where they've been a staple for a decadeish now.)

I vividly remember visiting "Pound Empire" in Manchester - it was a chain, I gathered. One of many "pound stores" in England.

Yes. Virtually every secondary to tertiary retail pitch in the UK has a variation on the pound store theme,

Yup, there's one just a few blocks away from my house here (in Chicago). They are ubiquitous in Omaha also, I've noticed on trips home.

We had 100 Yen Xmas in Japan, so I can confirm their existence there too!
