Babylon 5: The Rangers
A d20 supplement from Mongoose Publishing
ISBN 1-904854-45-1
$24.95
126 Pages

The Babylon 5 license has had a rough experience in the role-playing industry. The first adaptation of the license was produced by Chameleon Eclectic publishing, and was pilloried for everything from printing errors to the timeframe the game was set in (the decade preceding the events of the show).

Mongoose’s iteration has also suffered from critical scorn, particularly from some poorly prepared supplements. The Rangers supplement, however, manages to rise above its parent game and the predecessor.

The Rangers supplement covers the most glamorous role-playing possibility of the B5 universe, the eponymous Ranger organization.

At this point, the author would like to distance himself from any discussion of similarities and disparities between any of the setting of Babylon 5 and Tolkien’s middle Earth. Thank you.

That having been said, the Rangers in the B5 universe are a group of covert agents working for the Minbari government, keeping an eye open for the activities of the sinister Shadows.

To do this, they must act secretive, hide a lot, and discover secrets. See what I meant when I said they were glamorous?

Of course, the odds that a secret, millennia old covert organization will last very long when they wear large cloisonné pins and long, flowing, very conspicuous robes seem rather slim, but the Rangers did manage it. Must be all those levels in Hide.
