"Mc" and "Mac" are still not common in Ireland. They are not unknown, but they are rare.

Although they may not be common, I knew many Irish guys whose surnames began with Mc. Hence, the joke IS valid, the joke WILL stand!

Ummm, they're reasonably common. Common enough that the phone books have separate sections for 'M' and 'Mc', and it's a pretty big section. McDonald itself is pretty rare though.
