Thanks to everyone who replied to the earlier query about Yanks & NYC.

It was spawned by this article in the Toronto Star (yes, you have to register. Deal.) that indicated that there's a resentment towards the heart o' the nation from the further capillaries.

I guess you're lucky, down in the Holy Republic, that you have a number of cities (as [livejournal.com profile] rdansky pointed out) of significance down there. All we've got is TO, and maybe Vancouver.

Otherwise, you've got Montreal and Montreal wannabe Quebec City acting like two cities under siege from each other as they desperately vie to produce the next winner of Star Acadamie. Then there's Calgary and Edmonton glaring at each other across the prairies, this year even lacking a hockey season to release the homo-erotic tension.

And Ottawa, the bureaucrat of the nation, pince-nez and bow tie, fingers stained with red ink while university students surge across the bridges to hull every weekend night, returning with a trail of vomit dripping from their shoes.

And poor, sweet, slowly dying Kingston, wasting away like some gangrenous limb. Without Queens, really, what would that sweet, sad city have?

What about Sudbury?

Kingston? Nuthin' but limestone and fossils. Because the public transit system is crap. If it had a good transit system it would be a more successful city.

You haven't heard about Hull?

Date: 2005-02-07 08:23 pm (UTC)
Not only is it no longer Hull (Gatineau, thank you very much Lucien Bouchard) but now the bars along Portage are almost completely closed down. Happened probably around '96 or '97, when Ontario discovered it could screw Quebecois border towns and make its citizens celebrate simultaneously by allowing its bars to stay open until 2 a.m., instead of 1 a.m.

Hate to say it, but if I had any reason to go to Montreal, I'd be there every other week-end, because it is the only city with true life in this country. So everyone in the 'twa (if Oshawa's the 'shwa, then Ottawa earns the 'twa) tells me. Actually, it intimidates me with its exceedingly pretty people. Toronto isn't too pretty for me, though. :)

Kingston would still have released convicts and penitentiaries with future released convicts. And the military. Come to think of it, thank God for Queen's for that town.

My bureaucrat boss wears bow-ties. Is that bad?

He'd kill me if he knew I called him a bureaucrats, because we're supposed to be a private sector-minded entity within the public service. Which is why I just wasted 10-15 minutes putting this together...

I'm the communication rep, sort of - I do our web write-ups for our projects.

We're too small a group for a dedicated comms guy - but NRCan must have needs.

You kinda need an in with the gov't to get into the gov't... it ain't easy, I just got lucky that I knew someone who knew someone, and the first someone had known mama bitter before she knew papa bitter.

http://www.jobs-emplois.gc.ca/jobs/index_all_e.htm - for all gov't jobs.

poor suckers, they still live in quebec. i just pity them - until i realize dey can get beer at de depanneur (not de convenience store).

i think it'll be a while before i figure out how to be funny in my writing again.

I know mama bitter, too, come to think of it...

But I don't hire. In fact, at the end of March, if I don't succeed in my application for my OWN job, then I have no job.

Prisons. Lots and lots of prisons. Oh, and the second largest military base in Canada.

That's because most of it is underground. In the event that a state of emergency is declared in Canada, it's used as a safehouse for the Governor General, the Prime Minister and their cabinet, and the leaders of all political parties that have official party status (except the NDP, which has been alloted a small room at the Ontario Science Centre for that purpose).
