Do people in the states hate people who live in New York City?

It seems fairly unlikely, since they keep watching TV shows set there, but I'm curious.

Not hate so much as are suspicious of.

No, but we're pretty sure they hate us.

Nah.

Ha! All three of the commenters are right, imo. I don't hate people who live in NYC, but I do hate the damn "everything good that exists elsewhere exists here, probably before you ever heard of it; everything revolves around us," attitude. Fuck off. I was born in Minnesota, that doesn't make me an inferior life form, you surly pricks. :P

Pramas lived in NYC for 9 years as a younger man and I refer to it as his mistress. For about four years after he moved out here he pined for NY like one would pine for a lost love and it drove me crazy (because I can compete with another woman, but I can't compete with a fucking city!).

I'd choose to live in New York over LA in a heartbeat, though.

The rest of the country has a love/hate relationship with New York. It's undeniably the coolest place on Earth and that's why everyone else alternately envies and hates it. That many New Yorkers don't feel the same way about the rest of the country only ensures that the hate portion of the dichotomy wins out most of the time.

While I live in the South, it's rare but you ill find the odd person who grumbles about "New Yorkers" in regards to anybody north of the Mason-Dixon. It's possible they sort of assume New York is akin to a Grecian city-state, but on the whole, I don't think there's any resentment.

That said, I actually don't think I watch any thing set in New York, 'cept for The Sopranos, which is New Jersey and thus probably worse.

Just the Yankees.

Well, with the Yankees not winning a World Series in a while it's been much less urgent to hate New Yorkers. Instead, you get a lot more bile directed at either Los Angelenos or Washingtonians. Seattle gets sort of a second-hand hate for inflicting Starbucks upon the world, though the Nirvana boxed set has mitigated much of that. Philadelphians attract more disdain than hate, and with Bostonians all you can really do is make fun of the accent by asking them to say "Park the car in Harvard Yard." Drinkers of good beer hate St. Louisians, as do any individuals who've actually had to try to figure out the Interstate system surrounding that city, while Chicagoans are despised only by members of Sammy Sosa's immediate family. Atlanta doesn't get hated, mainly because over 87% of the United States' population has at some time been shuffled through Atlanta Hartsfield Airport and realized that there's nothing that we can do to Atlantans that they haven't already done to themselves.

Most of the time we don't hate New York. Those would would enjoy living there love it, and often end up moving there for a short time. Those who would like to visit but not live there often do, and those who would hate living there look on the "hell" the New Yorkers have created for themselves and allow a small sense of pity into their lives.
